Question about Singer Sewing Machines

2 Answers

I inherit a Singer 281-21 sewing machine from my grandmother, and I know nothing about it. She was a seamstress by trade, and brought this one years after she retired. Can you point me in the right direction to find the information that I need?

You have a high speed (for the time) industrial Singer sewing machine. If you click here you will find a free download of the servicing manual for your machine: it's very comprehensive and includes the operating instructions, but as it's aimed at professional users it assumes the user already knows a bit about sewing machines. Note that on the 281-21 regular maintenance and correct lubrication is even more vital than on their domestic machines from the same period.

I hope that you are pleased with the speed and content of my free answer, if so then please take a brief moment to rate my reply. Good luck with your machine, it's a bit of a heavyweight but should give many more years of faultless use if looked after.

I don't see that model number listed in Singer, maybe, call Singer (1-800-4singer) and ask for their assistance. They do have free downloads of their manuals but yours is not listed.

I am sorry. The 60629850 Singer Sewing machine was told to me that it was born in 1884 not 1883! Please help me find a manuel for this machine in original condition!

In the 1900s there were no manuals as the seamstress would be taught how to use the machine the shop selling the product. A Singer sewing machines are all very similar and an older seamstress would be able to share information, I would have thought.
There may be someone here willing to help;

Yes, the Singer UK site has a history of the Singer sewing machines with a list of the year of manufacture. For a serial number that starts with 2 letters, see: http://www.singermachines.co.uk/faq/tell-sewing-machine-age-from-two-letter-serial-number/ . The AD83648 was built in 1935 n Elizabeth, NJ.

I hope this helps.

Serial Number AF652997 Grandmothers old peddle Singer. Any idea on the model and date?

Hi! Oh, I just love old Singers! If you wanted, it would be fairly easy to get your grandmother's machine up and running again. . . .Talk about saving energy! (Plus the workout is great!)
Anyway, back to your question: Serial number AF652997 was made sometime around 1935 - 1938 at Singer's Elizabethport factory. To find out the model, you can email Singer at TalkToUs@SingerCo.com or call them at 1-800-4-Singer. They've always been very helpful.
Happy Sewing!!

The bottom part of mystitch looks like a bird nest

HI Leaann! I have solution that may help!
I inherited an old Singer 457 (from 1964!) from my Grandmother. I used it a few times with success but then I too started to get birdsnests on the bottom of my work or knots in the area the houses the bobbin.

After much fiddling, using different bobbins and spools of thread, tension and what-not, I discovered that the it was one particular plastic BOBBIN giving me trouble! Although it appeared the same size and width, there is something about this bobbin that will mess up the machine (and within 16 stitches).

I just tossed the thing and have been trouble free ever since!

Try changing out your bobbin, the problem may resolve itself.
