Question about Canon PowerShot A70 Digital Camera

1 Answer

E18 First the LCD screen showed a blur of colors. Now when in the review mode, it only goes to black, with a buzzing sound followed about 5 beeps then an E18 message. Haven't dropped it, immersed in water or anything unordinary.

All your trips and links have been very helpful. Tried everything without success, short of disassembling the entire camera. I'm beginning that long process now thanks to a good photo guide link from Bulgaria. There's a zillion steps to complete.

Before receiving excellent advice from t00nz to sell on eBay as is, I jumped in to try and disassemble and find the problem. I got frustrated and sent all the pieces to the garbage pail. Camera had served me well since 2003. Thousands of excellent photos. I got my $$ worth.

The following blog outlines some repair options for an E18 lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

It's important that you fix the E18 error first, as the blur of colors may be symproms of a failing CCD. If so, Canon would fix this for you for free IF the camera has no other problems (ie no E18 lens error). Please see the following info:

Wish you luck, but that's a very difficult process you're about to undertake. Recommend instead considering selling the camera unopened on ebay (take a look to see the going rate for an E18 error broken A70, think you'll be pleasantly surprized). There are many hobbyists (like myself) who are itching to take a crack at repairing a broken camera (hey, it beats sudoku), particularly Canon's. You could use the proceeds as partial payment on buying a new/newer camera also from ebay.

Shooting mode shows nothing.

Hello,

I just had this issue with my camera (my 15 year old son solved it for me ;-) ).

The viewfinder was active in "record" mode and the LCD was "active" because you could see a little back light but no image. The "playback" mode would let me review pictures in the LCD though so I know it is capable of showing information.

If you push the display key/button a couple of times you can see the picture move from the viewfinder to the LCD and have just a picture and or a picture and information.

So try setting the camera to "record" mode (lens comes out) and then push the "display button" which is on the back of the camera just to the right of the LCD on the lower right side several times and see if the LCD starts to work.

It could be that somehow the display button was pushed by mistake.

Turn on camera but the lcd sceen is black

Have you checked the display mode you're in? If you have the display set to off (to save power) and also the picture review time set to off, then you'll just see a black screen. Try pressing the 'Disp.' button below the screen when the camera is on - it should cycle through different settings with each press: Off, On, On with picture info. Similarly, in the playback mode this will show you more or less info about the picture you are viewing.

Even if the display is switched off, if you have your 'review' option in the menu set to anything other than Off (i.e. 2 seconds), then you should see the picture you've taken appear on the screen straight after taking it.

If it's not that, then I don't know the answer....

Camera will not operate

Use the audio-visual cable that came with your camera and connect your camera to your TV.  Now turn-on your camera and switch to "view mode", e.g., to see a already taken picture on your LCD.  You will not see anything on your LCD but may see an image on your TV, even if the image is "F18".

I used the above trick to clear an F18 error on an A75.  Right now I am trying to get the camera to focus properly, but somehow the above cleared the F18 error.

If the above does not work, try connecting your camera to your computer's USB port using the other cable that came with the camera.  Your camera will want to be on, and in the "view mode".  I have read that this trick can reset an F18 error.

Good luck.  At least it costs zero to try these two tips.

No image -- just colors on led and photo

I found the same fault, but for me it is intermittent. I have tried all sorts of things to clear it, but the best seems to be leave it turned off for a while. I bought my Ixus 400 in Sept 03 and the fault started in Jun 07. It shows already taken pictures with no problem on review on the LED screen, but the screen blurs (with motion) and records that same blurred image.

This is an indication of a lens problem. It is quit possible that the camera received a knock or drop at some time. This would throw the lens out of alignment. A qualified technician can sometimes repair the lens. If not you are in for a quite expensive repair bill because the lens will have to be replaced and the camera reprogrammed.
