If this is an electric saw, then the only oil typically needed is to lubricate the chain and bar. You should buy specific "bar oil". Other oils are not as tacky and will sling off the end of the chain causing it to heat up and stretch.

I have a Remington 14' Limb n' Trim electric chainsaw. There is an oil reservoir (I think - it has a little rubber cap) and I am not sure if it is for motor oil. If it is, what type of oil should I use?

jmccabe2465-

The reservoir is for bar chain oil, which all chain saws require to allow the chain to operate smoothly and reduce heat build-up from friction.

Hope this helps.

What kind of oil is required for the chain and is the oil inserted in the resevoir where the cap is located? If so, does the chain automatically oil itself?

There should be a filler cap in the front of the saw, it uses Bar and chain oil, I use two stroke oil, it is thinner but works great, only replaced one bar in twenty years, sometimes I mix it with chain oil, and most new saws oil themselves automatically, keep the tip out of the sand and dirt and make sure it doesn't turn blue from heat, then you will know it is not oiling itself. Sometimes I pour oil directly on the chain to get it going, hope this helps.

I am unsure of what kind of oil to put in my 12" chainsaw(electric)?

Well, if it's electric it doesn't need the 50:1 or 25:1 gasoline to oil ratio 2 cycle oil.

It needs bar chain oil , which is thick and lubricates the chain. Only this kind of oil is required for your chain saw.

Remember to adjust the tension on your chain.

Lost manual need to know what kind/weight oil does the Remington 16" chain saw require?

Any good quality chain saw 'bar' oil is suitable and it does not need to be an expensve brand either: it is highly recommended that you use a specially blended chain saw 'bar' oil but in emergency you can you fresh 'thick' (e.g. older) car engine oil but don't make it a habit as your chain and bar will wear off a lot faster!

Where do i purchase chain saw oil for electric chain saw

Hi
It would be helpful to know where durban is. In most parts of America "Bar Oil" is available at many hardware stores, and certainly at any chain saw dealership.
Oddly enough, many "Green" aware saw operators are now using vegetable oil as a lubricant. So Canola oil, Corn oil, or any other fairly thick, heavy vegetable oil will work fine.
The oil is pumped onto the bar at the top of where it exits the motor housing, and then circulates around the bar. Much of it is lost on the first pass the chain makes through the wood. This is carried away in the chip stream coming out of the cut. On many gas saws, you can see oil being slung off the chain when you rev the motor up.
The green feeling is, all this oil is left where we cut. Are we leaving a biodegradable oil behind? Or a contaminant that will take years to degrade.

Stay safe, keep the blade sharp - use the protective gear as directed.

MY ELECTRIC CHAIN SAW

With an electric chainsaw, you only require chainsaw bar oil. There is plenty of brands of chainsaw bar oil available at most hardware or pwer garden tool retailers. Use this oil and not any other generic car oil or anything like that as you will run into problems. Chain bar oil is designed to flow and the higher quality bar oils are better designed to adhere to the chain and tooth components to keep heat on the bar and chain down.
