Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

My 8 1/2 year old 27" JVC [AV-27230] TV-CRT accepts power but displays only a black screen where the only visible light is the power on light and timer light. Pressing the menu button on either the remote control or TV does not bring up any screen text for the purpose of getting out of the timer mode. This set is linked with ATT verse, a DVD, and a smallish entertainment center. I have substituted this this TV with another, so I am convinced the problem is with the JVC, not the other gadgets. Being 82 and having the TV within an armoire precludes my lifting it out and taking it to a shop. Is there anyway to get it out of the timer mode as I wonder if this would allow me to see text on the scree for the purpose of determining if I have setting problem od do you see this as a problem that is not worth the cost of repair? Many thanks.

Your articulate answer is what I expected and the obvious expertise makes me feel comfortable
as I make read to go out and purchase a replacement. TV. There is no power on light on the
console of the old TV, but the fact that the power light is on, I am assured that power goes into
the TV, but the tV could care less.

    Thanks much.

The answer was easy to understand. I did not expect a fix solution, on this old CRT TV, but your articulate reply gave me the confidence to move on and order a 27" LGM2762D from, something I just did. I have bookmarked this site as a place to go for expert advice as I just received from Azraelsrl.

This isn't a setting problem - when both light on the front panel are lit it's because the power source of the tv has failed and the lights are signalling the damage.
The tv is fixable - but you will have to call a repairman to replace the failed capacitors and the fried secondary power stage. It will cost you about $200, home visit from a repairman included.
But your tv is old and the parts inside it have aged and are starting to fail. Pretty soon the horizontal deflection will fail - another $200. Followed by the controller , and the sound amplifier, and the vertical deflection, and...
It will be cheaper in the end to just get a new tv.
