Question about Onkyo TX-SR502 Receiver

1 Answer

I just picked up a used Onkyo TX-SR502 receiver that has no audio output on any of the channels. I obtained a service manual for it and have tried a few things, but dont know the source of the problem yet. Here is what I know: Unit powers up normally. A "click" is heard a couple of seconds later from the output relay. Display is normal - no protect mode messages. Tuner seems to operate normally - will find and lock onto FM stations. No sound from any speaker output or headphones. I did a reset on the unit, but no change in operation. In the service manual I see there is a "DSP Debug Mode" so I initiated that and got the following output: 1A48K010x 00 x. This does not look normal, but I dont know how to properly interpret in order to find what the problem is. Where should I start in order to track this output problem down? Thanks!

I have the same problem, how did you initiate debug mode ?
The receiver worked perfectly until a few days ago, then one day it didn't work when I turned it on but started working after a few minutes. The next day it did the same thing and the folowing day it didn't work at all. Have tried the power reset and also had the top off to see if there's anything really visibly burnt - nothing.
This receiver never got bad treatment, left on overnight a few times but not with sound running out, just powered up. It's a bit enclosed I guess so maybe overheated but I find it hard to believe.
Anyway, can someone advise how to initiate debug mode and also what to do with it.

Thanks

Can you use an Onkyo RC-771M remote control to operate Onkyo receiver TX-SR502 ?

Unfortunately, the RC-771M remote doesn't control the TX-SR502. It will only work with these Onkyo models: TX-NR1008 and TX-NR808. The RC-567M is the one for the TX-SR502; replacement remotes that are exact replacements are still available from various places including Amazon.com .

Since the TX-SR502 was released in ~2004, that replacement remote probably won't control other devices that were released in 2004 or later. Onkyo changed its IR code programming before the TX-NR1008 was released in ~2010 and the RC-771M can't communicate with the older receiver. The manuals for the receivers listed above are still available from Onkyo on the product page under the Downloads tab.

I wish that I had better news for you.

When connecting optical inputs there is no audio output

You have to assign each digital input.

Register and download the manual for free at retrevo.com

Search the document for "assign".

I have an audio problem with my TX-SR502.

If your remote also controls the Cable Box you might want to look at its audio settings. Maybe you muted it.

BTW: it would be a good idea to also run video and analog audio from the cable box directly to the TV if it has speakers so you can watch and listen independent of the Onkyo.

My Onkyo TX-SR502 suddenly no sound output. Why?

Same issue on a friend's receiver. I have checked and no signals from preamp pcb to main amp board, which is idling just fine, all channels. The day he brought in we checked it and it played just fine. I then took apart the faceplate to clean the display window and after that had it working for a day and a half while working on other stuff. He comes back a month later to pick up and now nothing. I have decided this is not going to go any further and just thought I'd share my findings. I think it's time we all move on.

Central chanel no works

Hi on Onkyo receivers you must go into the speaker setup and select YES for center channel, I've on occasion turned a setting to no when I wasn't paying attention.

If that doesn't work check to see if your unit has PRE inputs and outputs
if so there should be a jumper pin that connects the two.

Onkyo TX-SR502 protection mode

Hello! One of the channels in your unit has shorted output transistors and is sending about 60 volts towards your speakers. If your unit has an output chip ( I don't ever remember seeing an Onkyo with a chip though...all discrete transistors ) it is shorted. Your unit is well worth repair. Onkyo is an execellent unit. Please rate this solution! Thankyou!
