It is the convergence units themselves in the TV that are failing, that is why they help slightly but can't fully correct the problem. This is major hardware failure for sure, and on this older unit of Hitachi a very common problem. It is repairable but cost prohibitive to do so. You may want to look into just replacing the unit. Let me know though if you really want to attempt the repair yourself.

Thanks
Tim

Well it's pretty difficult for sure, but if you can do it yourself you're probably very inexpensive really, especially if you can pinpoint it down to capacitors / transistors that have the problem. Less than $20 really if you can do that, but that takes some serious electrician skills.

It is going to be one of these parts on this listing, if you have the board right there you can easily identify which cap / part you need, but I am having a hard time finding a schematic with that info.

They are on here for sure though:

I understand but they are not easy to find, I usually can find them no problem but there is not much documentation for this 10 year old TV :(

No picture, only colored vertical lines

Settings. It sounds like the convergence. It needs to be adjusted. Have had this problem before. A lot of people actually throw there TVA away because they have this problem and they think its broken, when its usually just a simple fix of adjusting the convergence. You have to make sure the little box, on the convergence settings is in the middle. Hope it fixes ur problem. :)

My picture is doubled on my toshiba TN50V71 as if there is a shadow behind everything? Please help!

hi, sounds like a convergence issue. try this...
  • Look through your manual. Your manual will always give you the most specific directions for your particular model. Look for an "adjusting convergence" or "set manual convergence" section.

  • Enter the menu on your TV. Use the remote control and bring up the menu.
  • Choose "Convergence." This may be under "Picture Settings," "Function" or "Advanced Options."
  • Select a color. You will have red, green and blue to choose from. Do each one, starting with red.
  • Press "Enter." A crosshair pattern will appear on your screen.
  • Adjust vertically. If there is a horizontal red line visible, press the up or down arrow keys (or channel up or down) to adjust the convergence until the line is superimposed on the horizontal-center line of the white crosshair.
  • Adjust horizontally. If there is a vertical red line visible, press left or right (or volume up or down) to adjust horizontally. Do this until the line is superimposed on the vertical line of the white crosshair.
  • Save settings. It is important to save your settings when you are done, instead of simply exiting the menu.
  • Repeat these steps for all colors.
    good luck!

Getting a picture but double visioned and red lines running through it

This is 1 of 2 problems.

1; Convergence(depending on the model of the TV, the convergence ic's will have cold solder joints) 2: vertical ic issues.

If they are different colored lines & the picture also bends, it's a convergence problem. Else suspect a vertical problem. In the case of vertical issues, most of the time it's a defective capacitor (or cold solder joints.).

if it's the 3-crt kind of big screen, it's possible for one of the tubes to be going bad.

    Good luck!

Projection TV sets have two very common problems listed below.

    Problem #1) Convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

    *Screen Looks 3-D
    *Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

    *Dull looking picture
    *White looking picture
    *Halos around objects
    *Red/Orange looking picture

there is no convergence adjust in a 32" tv. Convergence is done when there is more than 1 picture tube, ie; 50" projection sets have 3 tubes so convergence can go out. post the model number of your set and we can help more, BMW Rider
