Question about KitchenAid Refrigerators

1 Answer

Hi I have fridge model #KSRS27IKSS01 and the ice maker quit working. Water still comes to the dispensor so water supply to maker is OK. Looked at mechanism and it looks normal. Any ideas?

HI,
Take off the back panel in the freezer. 1/4" screws. Use a nut driver or ratchet and socket with an extension.
2. Behind the frost is the evaporator and the defrost heaters. One heater in the middle and one at the bottom. They are glass tubes. If you can see the bottom heater that is great. If not use a hair dryer and defrost only the very bottom to expose the lower heater only.
3. Now in the refrigerator section at the top where the controls are, take off the long plastic piece to expose the timer. The timer should be on the right hand side and have a little circle that is slotted. Get a flat screwdriver and turn that timer slowly clockwise just until it clicks and the refrigerator turns off. This will put it into defrost.
4. Now look at that heater that you exposed and see if it glows and gets hot. If it does, then the timer is bad.
5. If the heater doesn't come on then go ahead and defrost the rest of the evaporator with the hair dryer. This will take a little while. Don't poke at the evaporator!!!
6. Once totally defrosted look at both heaters. They should look like clear glass and see a silver coil running thru them. If they look discolored at all then the heaters are bad. The heaters come as a complete assembly with the defrost thermostat which clips onto the evaporator.
7. If the heaters look ok the only way to know for sure if they are bad is to check continuity with a meter on the plug at the end of their wiring harness. If you can check that then you can splice in a new defrost thermostat to solve the problem. However the best thing to do is replace the heaters and defrost thermostat . It is easy to install.
Follow these steps and this will solve your problem.

Ice maker not filling up with water, but it dispenses water.

Check for a blocked frozen fill tube at the ice maker. Very common. Make sure you have good water pressure at the water dispensor. If it takes a long time to fill a glass you need to either change your water filter if your fridge has one or make sure your water supply valve located at the other end of the water line is not plugged. If all this checks ok, you may need a new solinoid valve on the refrigerator.

Ice maker not working in sub zero 561 model

you need to make sure that the unit has the water supply turned on. if you have a water dispensor on the front door and you are getting water then the water supply is on.

This ice maker is located in tight spot and has to be removed to cycle it manualy. so im going to give you a different way of doing a test.

first i want you to try to put your finger in the ice maker to see if you have any water or ice in it.

If it is empty then follow this step : try to get water in it without removing the ice maker. Do not fill it to the rim, just about halfway. This wont be easy, but if you do that you can check it the next day and see if it droped ice. if it did then your water valve is bad.

If it has ice in it then the ice maker in mostlikey bad.
or the switch for on and off is bad. (not common)

The freezer has to be under 14 F for most ice makers to operate.

ICE MAKER QUIT MAKING ICE ON MY WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE

I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.

Water Dispensor and Ice Maker Not working

Make sure you have water coming to the water inlet valve and then check to make sure that your water filter is pushed all the way in. Next check your solenoids in the back of your fridge. With the power off take an ohm meter and test across the two terminals and it should not Ohm out or beep. If it does you need to replace the solenoids

Water will not come out of my fridge

i assume you mean the refrigerator. You probably have a bad water valve. If the ice maker is working we know we have a good water supply. It is usually located on the back of the refrigerator. Follow the plastic tube running up to the ice maker and you'll find it. There should be two valves w/ solenoids. They each have a set of wire running to them. Switch them and press the water button. If you hear water flow to the ice maker you know all the circuitry is good to the valve. If not you have a bad water supply or defective dispensor. If not check you can test for continuity to verify a bad valve. Compare the readings of both solenoids they should be similar.. We have eliminated water suppy and circuitry, so it is probably the valve. You will need a model number and serial number to ensure you get the proper replacement part.

Water dispensor does not dispense water. Ice maker works.

you have prime the system air out of the water lines this is easy to do
put a glass big enough to cover water dispensor outlet cause its going to project water out at you press and hold button till water starts to run smooth
these fridges will spit water at you when you prime the system at first cause theres air blockage in lines

Ice maker has quit ,had this one put in after only six months ,and now this one has quit.

  1. Water comes from water pipe, usually with a shut off valve (open??).
  2. Fridge has a small filter (for sand etc.) at inlet. (not clogged??)
  3. Water travels to solenoid valve, and waits for request. (do you hear it click when water requested??)
  4. Water usually goes to a fine filter..(these fail (plug) quite regularly).
  5. Water goes through storage in back of cool section (Inside fridge- is it full of water?).
  6. Water goes to ice maker on fill request.
  7. ?? Is the power switch "on" (to icemaker)??
  8. ?? Is the full / stop filling paddle/bar up?
  9. ...ask me more questions
More likly than not- it has just frosted up and needs manual defrosting, or the water filter is plugged (assuming the cold water dispensor is slow)
