Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

I have the Garmin Nuvi 660. When trying to input a street name or location, it requires me to push the letters or numbers multiple times when spelling. I bough the unit in 2007 and it is also do for a map upgrade. I am trying to determine if this is repairable or easiet to purchase a new one.

Try recalibrating the screen or the screen needs to be replaced. Please see these links:

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Thank you for your question.

Go to the Garmon.com website. Check for an "update for your Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver. Download the update which may take a while. It's best to start downloading and go do something else for a while until the download is complete.

If this doesn't work, contact support at Garmin.

Go to the Garmin website now (click here)

If your unit was around $100 or so, it's easier to just buy a new one then to send yours in for service.

I found a discounted unit online:

Discounted Garmin GPS

Hope this helps you solve your GPS problem.

Nuvi 660 audio update?

This series of Nuvi has 2 sets of voices for several of the available languages. The standard set is pre-recorded words linked together to form directions. This voice is usually clearer. However you lose street names and expanded vocabulary. The Text-To-Speech (TTS) voices are reading letters to form words, and uses an algorithm to come up with the approximate pronunciation of the word. This may sound less clear, but provides street names. So, you can select a standard voice (settings-locale-voice language) and lose some functionality, or select one of the many TTS voices and try to find one that doesn't offend the ear.

Question
: My nuvi is supposed to speak street names when giving voice prompts but it doesn't. How can I fix this?
Answer: All of the Garmin automotive GPS units that speak street names are also loaded with basic voice prompts (i.e. 'Turn Right in 500 feet') as well as 'text-to-speech' voices that speak street names. If one of the basic types of voice prompts has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names.
In order to change this setting on the nüvi line of products, please follow these steps:
  1. In the Main Menu, tap on the Settings icon.
  2. Tap on "Locale"
  3. The second line on this screen has a picture of a mouth. To the right, the current voice for the GPS device is listed. Tap it to change the voice.
  4. Select a voice that is labeled with (TTS) at the end. These voices will speak street names.
  5. Select "OK". The voice has now been changed.
The device should now speak street names.

The Garmin GPS' are designed to read major roads and highways this way, as this is how they are marked as you drive on them. There is no way to change this.
