Question about Gateway MX6448 Notebook

1 Answer

Battery is not recognized after power jack was replaced. When I replaced the battery it did not solve the problem. Battery is not getting charged or recognized. May need BIOS update, but can't find it anywhere.

Yes, I runs on AC power just fine. If the battery is attached, after disconnecting the AC power it still runs for some time on battery power (as the new battery came with 3/4 charge according to the indicator lights), but it does not get any new charge when run on AC power.

They are kind of a well respected hardware shop and they assured me that this was a software problem... They used a new part, refused to solder...
If we assume that they are telling the truth, are there any other possibilities? If not, I'll have to go back to them... The power cord is the original one and I also tried the universal cord to eliminate faulty cord possibility...

This is not a bios problem, that's for sure. So with the new power jack does it work just fine without a battery, running on AC power?

Thanks

That means whoever replaced the AC adapter did not install it correctly, it is missing the contacts to the battery terminals of the device. If you had a shop do it take it back to them and have them correct it.

    Thanks

If it were a faulty cord it wouldn't run on the AC power at all so definitely not that, as you already know. There is no software that charges the battery, I can't believe they tried to tell you that. Let's pretend there is for a minute, it should still work since they didn't do anything to the software, you didn't change anything on the software, why wouldn't the new AC adapter work even if it was software based? You had that "software" there before you had the ac input problem. But there is no such software, but I was just giving you another arguing point, it would have worked regardless because you didn't change any "software" that would have affected that.

But it's at a hardware level, it should even charge the battery with the machine off as I'm sure you know. You don't have to have the machine on to charge a battery, which means there is NO way it can be software.

    Thanks
    Tim

Batteries only have a useful life and once it is used up they have to be replaced.

If you can get on the laptop and work without any problems using your AC Adapter and Power Cord then the battery is definitely dead and needs to be replaced.

If you have problems using your computer using the AC Adapter and Power Cord then either your Power Cord is Bad or the DC Power Jack where the power cord plugs into the computer is bad. If either of these two is bad they will not charge a Good Battery.

Check your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs into the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

Battery won?t charge and AC adaptor not recognized

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that just turned two years old.

After one year, my dell 6-cell battery started to falter, so Ipurchased a new 9-cell battery. This worked fine until a couple ofmonths ago when I noticed that my 65W adaptor was frayed. I bought anew 65W Dell Inspiron 6000 ac adapter andit worked well for about a week until I noticed that my battery wasn’tcharging at times. If I was patient, or unplugged the adapter andplugged it back in, the battery began charging and all was saved.

This lasted only a short time until my Dell Inspiron 6000 batterywouldn’t charge at all for long periods of time, and sometimes thecomputer wouldn’t turn on, even if plugged into the wall. I thought itmight still be the adaptor, so I borrowed a fully functioning 90W Delladapter from a family member to test the system. This worked better, but still not great.

When I removed the battery and started only fromAC power, the functionality was also intermittent. Usually, if thecomputer actually started, I received the start-up error “The Inspiron 6000 AC AdapterType could not be determined, etc. etc. etc.” After pressing F1, thecomputer booted, but if the battery wasn’t in, the computer didn’tusually last long before shutting off. Unsure if maybe the battery wasthe problem, I put the 6-cell Inspiron 6000 batteryback in, and it too wouldn’t charge, although (together with the 90Wadapter) my computer would at least start more consistently if pluggedin. The error remained however, and sometimes the system stopsrecognizing power and switches to my ever dwindling battery power untilthe adapter is recognized again.

The problem is with the jack on the motherboard inside our Inspiron 6000’s. This is the jack you plug your power plug into on the back of the laptop.

Somehow the jack gets worn and does not make correct contact withthe laptop so the Laptop does not see the power supply as a legit Dellbrand. So the powersupply will not charge the laptop battery and run the laptop at the same time.

A bad connection between DC-IN power jack on the system board and the system board is a very common problem with dell pa 12,dell e1505 and Dell Inspiron 6000notebooks. If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix theproblem by resoldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it’s stillunder warranty, it would be fixed at no charge to you. Problem symptoms:

  • Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  • Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wigglethe power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  • The battery will not get charged.
  • When you plug ac adapter for laptop, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED * activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).
To fix the problem, you have to take your laptop apart, remove the system board to resoleder or replace the DC-IN jack. dell pa 12 and Dell Inspiron 6000 disassembly guides will help you to remove the system board. Take a closer look at the power jack on the system laptop board witha magnifying glass. In most cases you get the power problem because ofa bad connection between the DC jack and the system board, you’ll see acrack between the DC jack connector and the system board.

My Acer aspire 4935 is not recognizing the AC adapter. When ever I shutdown the system and connects the AC adapter, it works and the charging LED lights up. Once I press the power button to boot the...

Problem description:The battery charges only when the laptop turned off. The battery charge LED lights up as normal and the battery gets charged to 100% while the laptop is off.
When the laptop is turned on, the battery charge LED goes off even if the adapter is still plugged in.
Possible cause:1. AC power adapter failure.
2. Battery failure.
3. Broken/loose power jack.
4. Motherboard failure.
Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solution:1. This problem could be related to a faulty AC power adapter. It's possible that the AC adapter doesn't provide enough power when plugged into the laptop. To find out if this is your problem, you'll have to test the laptop with another working adapter.Replace the adapter if needed.

2. There is a slight chance that you have bad battery. Test the laptop with a know good battery and replace the faulty one if needed.

3. The battery charge problem could be related to the power jack. Maybe the jack is broken or not making good contact with the motherboard. It is necessary to remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. Resolder or replace the jack if needed.

4. If the power jack is in a good working shape and new power adapter with battery do not fix the problem, most likely you have a faulty motherboard. Replace the motherboard if needed.

When i plug in power charger, it says the computer doesnt recognize charger, and the computer wont charge. I have to plug it in a few times, then the battery will charge

Hello.

The most common reasons are the power adapter/cord and power jack.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.
The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.

Battery will not charge. Got startup message about not being able to determine wattage. Icon says plugged in not charging. Computer was dropped on power jack. Replaced power jack. Gives computer power...

The power adapter MUST BE a Dell brand power adapter.
If it is, then the socket that was replaced is not the right part.
Of course, the laptop can work just fine with the power adapter, it justwon't charge the battery.

Ac adapter

In some laptops the power socket (DC jack) is soldered to the motherboard.
If the battery stops charging when you wiggle the power plug inside the jack, either you have a bad power adapter (test it with a voltmeter) or the power jack is broken or loose.
If the power jack is not broken but loose (not making good contact with the motherboard) you can resolder the old jack without replacing it with a new one.
The laptop would have to be taken apart and the DC connector resoldered.
This would cost $75 - $100. Enter your zip code in the box on the right hand side of the FixYa page to find someone close to you.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

IBM T22 Battery won't charge & is not detected

Take it to a very good technician who will open it up and check a dry joint in the charging system.  Sometimes if you donot attend to it quickly you may find your T22 refusing to power at all with the AC Adaptor.  Delicate soldering may solve your problem.  Power may not be getting to the charging circuit and the battery thus it is totaly discharged.
