Question about SmartDisk FireLite 40 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

My firelight external hard drive's case was a bit damaged when traveling, but still worked fine. Until today, it is no longer showing up on my desktop as an icon and I can't find it under "My Computer" either. The blue light stays on and flickers every so often like it is trying to work but can't. Please let me know who to go to even if it is just to get my files off and purchase a new one.

This sound as though the controller board in the case has disconnected from the hard drive.
1. if you can disassemble the case carefully and reconnect the controller board this may retrieve the hard drive. If not then the controller board to the hard drive is damaged and a new case is needed to connect the hard drive and for the pc to read the usb port you connect it to.
I hope this helps. Have a great day!

you have to "stop" external drives under "safely remove hardware" or they can possibly be damaged. if the data is very important, it *may" ber possible to take the hard drive out of the case, and install it in a new hard drive case. this might work, depending upon the type of hard drive. they doi sell external hard drive kitxs in stores, but you have to know if it is a PATA or SATA hard drive. SATA is the newest, and likely any external drive from the past 2 years will be SATA.

Problem with WD 1.5TB external hard drive

This appears to be a common occurrence with the My Book. It may be a heat dissipation problem from leaving the unit on for longer than it takes to back up your data.

I think you might need technical support from Western Digital. Do you have an alternate backup?

Stopped Turning on.

The extra 4 volts of electricity may have fried the electronic parts inside the external drive's case. In other words, your hard drive may be ok even though the little circuit board that matches the external hard drive to your pc's USB outlet is ruined.
A computer shop can remove the hard drive from the external case and test that drive to see if it's still working. That's the best case senario. My best guess is that you cooked the electronics in the external case AND the hard drive. So sorry.

Extern WD drive

Hi,

Assuming you have tested the AC adapter with a voltmeter already which is the first step, the next step would be to pick up a new HDD enclosure and move the HDD into the new one for a test. If this works you're done, if not the problem lies in the circuitry of the actual HDD and you will need the help of a pro. If that is the case comment back here with your Country/State/City, I can recommend one of the many facilities I work with.

This external hard drive is no longer recognized in Windows Explorer. The blue light is on but all I hear is a ticking sound. Any clues please? It's a Smartdisk Firelight Model # USBFLB60 Many thanks. Ken

It could be that the power supply or USB port is not supplying sufficient power to the drive. That would give the behaviour that you are describing.

External USB Drives No Longer Detected

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea
