Check the oil level and condition in the crank case. If it's way overfull or diluted with gas, the crank case is tool full to let the piston come down. Change the oil and check to see if the float and/or needle valve in the carburator are stuck. Next; Pull the spark plug wire off the plug, remove the plug and tip the machine up. Using gloves or wrap something like a towel around the sharp part of the blade, try to pull the blade around in both directions. If it won't budge at all you have somethnig locked up inside the motor. If it moves aim the spark plug hole in a safe direction and pull it over with the rope. If oil or gas shoots out of the hole it was keeping the piston from going up. Keep pulling it over to get as much out of the cylinder as you can. Reinstall the spark plug and try to restart it. It may be hard to start and will smoke a lot until it burns everything out of the cylinder. If the cylinder was full of gas again check the float/needle valve in the carburator to see if they're stuck.

I purchased a 14" &20" chainsaw Model 8901/8902 and I am having difficulty pulling cord. It seems to lock. What could be the problem?

That is a good and bad sign. When a motor wears out and looses compression it gets very easy to pull. New motors should pull hard and be choppy or seem to "lock" however - you *MUST* carefully review your fuel mixture to ensure you are adding enough oil to the mix - if you used straight gas without adding oil you will burn the motor up and experience difficult pulling. Simple test - remove the spark plug - give it a good pull it should be liquid smooth with no binding anywhere on the pull. Report your results.

Pull start won't pull, seems stuck.

When you pull the cord it will turn the blade. Therfore if the blade is stuck or clogged with clippings the starter cord will seem stuck. In addition, the throttle on the handgrip need to be fully depressed for the starter cord to work. Last, some mowers have a saftey which lock the starter if the wheels are engaged. Hope this helps. The motor's pull start seems locked. How do I

Usually what I do first is pull the pump off the engine. After doing that use your hand to back the motor's shaft up about a quarter turn. Then without the pump on try to start the motor. If it starts put the pump back on and try to run it. Sometimes the crank and piston get set just perfectly so you cant pull it over. If that doesn't work post here again and I will help you further.

Pull cord is locked: not the reload spring

Often times I fear this part. But it seems there are a lot of frustrated people on here that no one is getting back to. So here goes....

If the flywheel is locked up, then the engine is locked up. Sorry.

Poulan 16" cannot start...pull cord locked up

Remove the cover, should be 4 screws that holds it on once the 4 screws are loosened the rope could rewind on its own. If not check to make sure the spring is not broken.

I just purchased a troy bilt bronco crt tiller. Put oil and gasoline in. Pulled the cord. It started. Ran maybe 15 or 20 seconds and stopped. When I tried to start it again, the cord would not...

remove the spark plug.  And pull the cord again.  if the carb float is stuck down or you overfilled the oil you could be hydro-locking the engine.  Check.
