Question about Thetford Porta Potti

Open Question

I have a thetford fridge freezer n145 with a problem. seems that if not used for a while during damp conditions the fridge will trip the rcd when first started on 240v, if we run on gas for a night then switch to 240v then all is fine. Usually happens at start of season i.e after the winter and if left unused for a few weeks during the damp months , obviousley here in the uk thats quite often :-) I have done a little research on this and it seems the 240v heating element is prone to condensation or damp causing leakage to earth , hence the rcd trip . some say just run on gas to dry it out and it will be fine again. This makes sense hope to fix this issue as the rcd trip takes out the power to 4 other caravans on the site. Could live with the starting on gas if only this was a problem at the start of the season however the last year or so the problem occurs more often if fridge is unused for a few weeks. Does the element corrode , therefore deteriating , is it easy to replace , any ideas to the actual location on the rear of the n145 would be much appretiated,Is it a known issue? is there any mileage in replacing the heater element ?. SOURCE: Thetford fridge type C11[fitted to caravan]model N80 PL R

This Caravan is a recreational vehicle? If you have an ammonia absorption refrigerator in the unit, and you smell ammonia, your fridge is leaking. This can be a health hazard. Park the unit and get the fridge serviced, they are repairable by independant service personnel. There are only 2 in Ontario Canada. If you go to an RV shop, the will only want to sell you a new fridge.

Good luck, try a search in your area for ammonia absorption refrigerator repair in your area.

I have a Bosch kfu5755/21 fridge freezer and it keeps tripping the rcd when I turn it on

Lee,

Most likely to be the defrost element which is located in the freezer.

Disconnect your appliance from the mains power supply

If you empty the bottom of the freezer and remove the drawers and shelves you should be able to locate screws to remove the rear panel. When you get this panel removed you should expose the evaporator.

26262363-xienn535tbiydys4e5iqbku3-5-0.jpg It is similar to the one above.

On your fridge the defrost element clips onto the bottom of the evaporator. If you follow the wires going to this element and disconnect both ends, your fridge will work untill you get a replacement part.

With the element disconnected and your fridge does not trip the rcd order the part from the link below.

I have a Maytag GC2227 and it is tripping an RCD. If the fridge temperature setting is switched to off the RCD does not trip but as soon as the temperature setting is adjusted the RCD??

Refrigerators are never supposed to be on GFCI devices, they will tend to "leak" a bit of current to ground during defrost and "trip" when there is no real problem... You can test this theory by plugging the machine into a two-prong adapter to see if it still exhibits the same symptom, the only problem I have seen in home refrigerators that can trip a 20 amp circuit break is a seized compressor that is drawing "locked rotor amperage." By design, the start relay/overload should interrupt power before this happens... Hard Start Kit RCO410

Why are (2)previously serviceable Vulcan oil heaters both tripping the RCD/safety switch when connected to their electrical supply? Is this a known characteristic of these heaters?

An RCD trips when it detects an imbalance in current flow - when more current flows in the live wire than the neutral indicating an escape into the ground circuit.

A combination of damp and dust and spider webs inside an appliance can cause this.

An ageing RFI or radio frequency interference suppressor might cause this.

I have experienced this with an appliance. When connected to an old-fashioned supply without an rcd it worked fine and I never did locate a fault with it. I am tempted to believe some (older) appliances simply shouldn't be used with an rcd. I suggest you ensure the interior is clean and dry and perhaps have a fellow with a portable appliance tester check your heaters for basic safety.

Machine displaying general alarm the infuser slide was very tight freed up and reassembled now turning the machine on results in an arc at the motor brushes which blows the RCD breaker.

Hi Chris
Good Job freeing it all up etc. Your 90% there
Can you remove brushes & clean and stretch a millimetre more out of brush leads to stop arcing. Or perhaps the load is to great.
I did notice you said RCD.
RCD's usually only trip when an in-balance occurs between the hot phase wire & neutral wires.
Eg... what goes in via phase wire must come out on neutral wire. Even a small millivolt trickle to ground will trip an RCD. (20-30ma)
The Residual Current Device is for electric shock Safety.
It is not the main fuse or circuit breaker.
RCD's can be a real pain when there is a slight moisture leak.
For Example.
My fridge in my Winnebago would trip the RCD after it hadn't been used for awhile. The insulation around the 10A heating element was damp & tripping the RCD continually.
So how do I bypass the RCD to heat the element up and get rid of moisture. My method was to use a stand alone generator with no RCD to power the RV.
Worked great. Once the element surroundings were dry it ran fine on the home 240vAC.
So... If you really are tripping the RCD then the problem is AC "LEAKING" to Earth. Usually Moisture.....Try a hair dryer
If it is really blowing a Fuse or Circuit Breaker then the problem is too much current being drawn in circuit.
Hope this Helps
Trevor

Find out why my freezer is shorting

Is your FREEZER is plugged into a wall socket which is protected by an EARTH LEAKAGE UNIT or RCD [Residual Current Device] ???
Most manufacturers advise NOT to have this type of appliance connected through an RCD as the start load required when the COMPRESSOR "kicks in" is quite large [especially in larger fridge/freezer units] AND will quite often TRIP your RCD. These appliances are better connected to a separate electrical circuit if at all possible and not protected by an RCD.

Fridge freezer tripping rcd

Ensure it fully dries out before trying it again. Water in the electrics will throw your trip instantly. If it's dry now, and you are having the same problem. check the electrics for a short circuit or earth fault. Usually a compressor earth fault is to blame.

I have a thetford N80 fridge fitted in my motorhome that pops the rcd until I cool it down using gas

it is drawing too much current and is a fire risk
there is a live wire touching the metal frame or the motor has locked up.
the rcd is saving you from having a fire or being electrocuted
can you find a local dealer who can diagnose/repair?

Westinghouse 410l fridge trips new RCD's in fusebox

Tripping an earth leakage would indicate a break down of insulation in the windings of the compressor, the possibility of a short circuit in the wiring system or the defrost element down to earth. I recommend you have a certified technician check it out before you have a fire. If the Hoover is in good condition there is no reason not to replace it. Rate me please.
