Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Hello I have the same problem with the Kenmore 70 series heavy duty machine where the machine all of a sudden stopped agitating and/or spinning. I can hear the motor spinning and when I peeped down by tilting the machine, I see that the motor turns very well. However, there is a white looking plastic piece with some rubber on it that I imagine would be a coupler?? tried turning it when the motor was ON. However, there was no action. It is my assumption that if the motor freely turns and the coupler does not, could it be that the coupler is broken. How do I replace the coupler or qualify it is the coupler that is the problem and not the transmission. The transmission looks quite solid on this machine. Thank you

YG13,
Remove the two screws that hold the console to the cabinet and flip the console back.
Remove the two clips that hold the cabinet to the rear panel of the washer and unplug the lid switch harness. The cabinet will tilt forward and slide off.
Remove the clips holding the water pump and move it to the side.
Unplug the wires from the motor and remove the clips holding it.
You will see the motor coupler.
Make sure you can turn the gearcase shaft with a pair of pliers so it is not locked up.
Post back with the complete model number from the washer if you need further help.
Thanks, Mike

Agitator does NOT spin along w/ drum during spin cycle

If this is the old style that uses a belt, it is not worth fixing. But the problem sounds like the wig-wam is not functioning properly. Most of the time it was a wire broken since it moves back and forth constantly.

Kenmore heavy duty series 70 won't spin

Will it drain ? IF wont drain either , then the lid switch is bad . (The piece on the washer where the lid actuator goes into the washer top ) . If it will drain , then the motor/trans coupling is bad , if it will not agitate/spin .

Series 70 fills wit water stops then makes a slight buzzing sound

The electric motor my have failed or a part called a capacitor could be the problem? The capacitor is part of the starting circuit of the electric motor, if this fails the motor will not start therefore the washing machine won't spin or agitate.

If it drains and won't spin you have to replace the direct drive coupling.

Timer stops at the end of wash cycle, won't began drain cycle

if it fills and agitates but stops at the drain/spin portion, it sounds like you have a problem with the lid switch. if it thinks the lid is opne, it will not drain or spin.

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.
