The magnetron is going, Too expensive to fix, cheaper to replace. Let me know if you have any further questions and I would be glad to help. GE microwaves don't seem to last very long and so I don't recommend buying another one. good luck

Hi, stop using this at once as it is either due to the paint coming off where the rollers run or it is due to some metal being not covered by the protective paint this is not safe to use and will need replacing

@Ekse sorry mate not jumping you.

Please dont use this microwave it isnt safe.
Are the sparks visible inside the microwave through the door if they are then this is due to the protective paint coming off somewhere inside the microwave this usually happens if its damp or any liquid has been spilt inside it.
Its always best to clean them often as this keeps the paint free from damp or water causing corrosion this isnt safe to use will cause harm to anyone near it so please replace this as it really isnt safe to keep using.
Usually if the paints come off their is no way of repairing it as it will soon happen again.
Just make sure when you get a new one to keep cleaning the inside as this will prolong the life of your microwave.

Sorry i couldnt give you good news but its just not worth taking risks best to get it replaced.

GE is known for not lasting and most of their products wont last past their warranty the kind of ones to buy would be Kenwood or Bosch, Toshiba. Basically any of the bigger brand names will last alot longer so as long as the inside is cleaned regular and kept dry you should find you will have no problems.
What causes the problem is when you cook the food all the steam sticks to the inside of the microwave and after time it corrodes the paint causing the bare metal to come through and this is what causes the arcing it does the same if you put a fork or spoon inside by mistake as many kids find out.
So clean it often and leaving the door open after cooking food for and leave it slightly open for 30min is enough to allow the steam and damp to dry out prolonging the life.
Hope this gives you some help and advice let me know if you have any questions ok and ill be glad to assist you further ok

  • paul proctor May 27, 2008

hi, sorry forgot to ask was the arcing actually inside the microwave so you could see it. The most common place for the bare metal to show is if you lift up the plate that spins round their will be 3 rollers that the plate spins on this is usually where the paint gets damaged as the rollers are constantly running on the paint in that area under the glass plate. It is best to be gentle when cleaning this area dont use anything abrasive just use damp cloth and make sure its dry after this will keep it lasting alot longer ok.
Hope this gives you some help.

After about 2 weeks of use, the microwave began to make a horrible buzzing noise from the "box" in the upper right hand corner on the back. It also smelled horrible. It then proceeded to stop working...

Two weeks? This is a warranty problem. The buzzing noise was probably either from high-voltage arcing or an overloaded transformer trying to drive a shorted component. The smell is from something electrical getting fried. Remember it; the next time you smell it, you'll know to pull the plug.

Panasonic Microwave NNSD277B 5yrs old makes noise after 20sec on (bUzzing and popping)and internal light flashes. Should be replaced or fixed ? what could be the problem?

You should have no arcing within the unit. Assuming you have adequate food/water in the cavity, it should not arc. You NEVER run the unit without something to be heated in it!!!

You might check the stirrer fan which is often in the roof of the unit to see if contamination might be in the area causing arcing. The electric fields in th area are very high and arcs can jump.

If the insulating window is charred or has charred grease, it should bbe replaced.

Arcing and noise when turn it on

I cleaned the microwave really well. I used a screwdriver to pull the plastic cover out enough to clean behind the edges with a soft toothbrush. Seems to have corrected the problem.

Microwave making loud buzzing sound when operated, sounds like something is about to pop.

could be several possible components at fault. how old is it ? does the unit heat ? if so, could be a hi voltage diode, or a hi voltage tranformer. (older frigidaire m'w's had trans. that would crackle and "arc" when bad) it is not the mag though, it wouldn't heat if so.

System Arcs and Makes Electrical buzzing sounds

If it weren't brand new, I'd suspect arcing due to grease or food particle buildup on or under the stirrer (if equipped) or waveguide cover, or the turntable area.

But since it's new, I would suspect that the stirrer or another part may have been damaged or misaligned in shipping.

Your best bet with a new one is to get it replaced.

It's hard to put a price on peace of mind.

Kenmore 721.80524500 makes a buzzing, grinding noise

Your problem is due to the "magnetron" arcing to the wave guide within the microwave. Picture someone arc-welding stuff together inside the microwave casing, that's essentially what's happening. It is a fire hazard and you should stop using the microwave immediately. As far as I know, there isn't a recall on that particular model (though there was on another similar Kenmore/Whirlpool model) so if it's out of warranty, you're out of luck.

Microwave works, new noise

It could be a bad magnetron, or it may be mild arcing due to food particles or grease on or behind the waveguide cover.

No microwave should ever be left unattended while running.
