You have a failure of the defrost system which is comprised of:
1. Defrost Timer
2. Terminating thermostat
3. Heater element
If you have no experience in servicing a refrigerator, I would recommend calling a technician, as it is a rather lengthy training session to write about. Or, you can ask one of our experts who can guide you through.
Tip: Manually defrosting the freezer thoroughly will allow the unit to function for several days until a tech. can get there.

I have a GE TFX22KRDAA side by side refrigerator. No matter what setting I have the refrigerator side on, the temp stays around 28 degrees. What is wrong? Thanks

Your refrigerator is getting up in age but I will give you a few things to check. 1st you could have a bad temp control that is actually stuck or out of calibration. All you can do in this case is replace the control.
2nd, this will sound a little strange but I'll try to explain. If you develop a problem with the defrost system, the frz section starts to build up excessive frost. The frost causes loss of air flow to the fresh food side which at first causes the refrigerator to run excessively and you get too cold fresh food temp at first. As the defrost problem continues and more frost builds, eventually the FF temp will start to go the other direction and get too warm.
3rd and the worst case, is that your main cooling motor(compressor) is getting worn out from age. It is a pump that has to circulate the freon. When they get old, its called low capacity and it runs all the time again causing too cold temps at first before going the other direction temp wise. Also check things like the coils under the fridg for dirt build up. You can clean them somewhat from the front under the doors with the crevis tool of a sweeper. With older refrigerators they need all the help you can give them.

The bottom freezer has exceesive frost, and is not cold enough. I tried to remove the frost, it will work for about a week afterwords. Help

Really when the fridge frost very excessively there is less cold.
You have to regularly set up defrost setting if your fridge has automatic defrost.
Or your fridge has manual defrost then defrost it twice a week.
To minimize excessive frost, set the temp control setting to just mid- position.
Good luck.

Refrigerator will not defrost. It has to be shut off then it works fine for about two weeks.Otherwise frig is in perfect condition model tfao C646-7580090 serial 6fb05791 typetfa18

The heat strip located under the evaporator is not working. When the defrost cycle goes on, the strip turns on, generates heat, and melts the frost that has accumulated on the evaporator. Ergo no frost.

If the strip does not work the frost builds up and ice is an insulator; it will keep the freezer from going down to the correct low temp. And since the freezer is not as cold, ditto for the fridge.

Replace the strip and all will be fine.

Freezer on my GE refrigerator is fine, but the frig looses temp.

There is a heating element that defrosts the evaporator coils in the freezer that burns out. It's under the coils in the back of the freezer, it is usually a glass tube with a heating coil in it and a wire coming out each end that is covered with a stainless steel guard too keep water from dripping on it while it's hot. The coils ice over and then no air can flow through them so the fridge quits cooling. You usually can get the defroster heater with the control switch and wiring attached for less than $40. This is general info for most refrigerators, not your model specific.

The refrigerator is 8 years old. the refrigerator

Any refrigerator should last around 14 yrs. The freezer must be frosted up. I would try to defrost it and then start it back up. If you have a defrost problem you will see this again inside of a week. Also make sure the evaporator fan is operating.
