I had the same problem when I made the mistake of trying to do a firmware upgrade via CD-R instead of the Network option. My player is no longer connected to the internet so I created a CD-R following the directions on Sony's site. The CD-R attempted to do the upgrade, but was stuck at 0/9 and I could hear the disc trying to read. The problem is the disc you created. You need to make another one. On the Mac, I used the Finder to burn the disc per Sony's instructions. That is what failed in the player. My second CD was created with Roxio's Toast Titanium, PC/Mac Data CD-R. If you have Windows, I would suggest using a commercial burning CD program, like EasyCD Creator and burn the two update files to the root level of the CD. Make sure the disc is finalized.
Next, you need to open the player to manually release the tray to eject the CD and swap it with your new disc. Remove the two back screws on each side. This removes the two side trim panels. Remove the two screws holding the top trim panel on each side. Then slide the top trim panel from front to rear to release the panel. If that doesn't work, open the CD cover door with your finger and then gently pull up on the top panel at the front edge to release the clips along the front, across the entire front edge. Then slide the panel back to remove it. Then remove the three screws at the front edge, and two more screws on each side. There is also one screw at the rear top edge. Remove the top panel. Then get a long paper clip. Looking at the front of the player, the manual eject hole is on the right side of the optical drive. Above the hole is an E engraved above the hole. Insert the paper clip straight into the hole and you should be able to push the release mechanism causing the tray to open. You might have to fish around a little. Slide the tray open and replace the disc with the newly burned disc (or obtain a disc from Sony for free through their website). Close the tray. You can leave the player open. Plug in the power cord and the upgrade will continue where it left off. It may take a minute or two, but you will see the VUP advance to 9/9, then finish. The tray will open and you can remove the disc. Close the tray and the player may reboot again. Once you see the No Disc message, turn off the player and pull the power cord. Reassemble in reverse order and reconnect your player to your TV and it will have the new firmware.

I forgot one step. After you remove the top plastic trim panel, you need to remove the front trim panel by releasing the three clips on the bottom, two clips on the side, and two clips on top. Then remove the rest of the screws to remove the top metal panel.

Gotta love the internet - I googled and found your solution to the exact problem I had. Thank you! I also followed the directions at Sony's site and burned a firmware upgrade disc using the Mac's Finder. My Sony Blu-Ray recognized the upgrade disc and started the process, then stuck at VUP 0/9. Following your instructions, I burned a new upgrade disc using Toast Titanium to make a Data "Mac

Your description of removing the panels from the Blu-Ray player to access the CD tray differed from what I had to do because I have a Sony BDP-S350. So for the benefit of those who have the BDP-S350: Remove the two screws one on each side. Then remove the three screws from the back - one at each of the top back corners and one at the top middle. Now slide the case slightly back to remove it. Next, remove the entire front panel by lifting up on the clips - I think there are 6 or 8 total. You have to go back and keep lifting up on them until you have enough of them released for the entire panel to come off. At this point you do not have to remove anything else. The manual eject hole is on the right lower side of the disc player towards the front. An E is engraved above the hole. Insert a straightened paper clip into the hole. It took a few attempts fishing around until I got the release mechanism to open the tray. Remove the bad upgrade disc and put in the new one. You do not have to put the front panel back on to proceed with the upgrade. Plug the power cord back in and wait for the firmware upgrade to finish. The tray will eject after completion. Remove the upgrade disc and put everything back together in reverse order.

After 2 failed attempts and a lot of online research, I used Toast and burned a CD in ISO9660 format at a slow burn speed. I removed the old CD, loaded the new one, and reconnected everything. The version upgrade was completed in less than 30 minutes and the BD player works fine.

I have the s-350 and I have been putting the paper clip in the hole with the e but I cannot get the tray open

    Thank You! Perfect instructions.
BTW Manual Eject is on the Right Panel of the drive, not the right side of the "front" like I had thought.

Following your instructions, I burned a new upgrade disc using Toast Titanium to make a Data "Mac & PC" CD-R although I unchecked the Mac boxes and just left the PC boxes checked. Once I removed the old upgrade disc and put in the new Toast-burned upgrade disc and plugged in the power for the Blu-Ray player, the VUP 0/9 flashed for about 5 minutes and then the upgrade proceeded to completion taking about 15 minutes total.

This solution worked perfectly for me, after having had the Sony tech service person tell me to send the player to Texas for exchange. Like others, I had used a Mac to burn the CD. For my second burn try, I used my Windows laptop.

I have a BDP-S550 player. I went through the same problem of the mac disc hanging. The previous suggestions were very helpful except for the plastic cover. I could not get the plastic top off by the suggestions, I had to slide the cover forward until it came loose. Then, I was able to take off three screws that held the metal frame in place. After that I was able to get to the front right side and release the drive by a paper clip and remove the disk. I made a CD-R disk on Vista OS and put into the drive. Plugged in the power cord and waited. It finally when through the process and upgraded the firmware. Thanks a lot guys.

My sony bdp-s350 has failed to upate latest firmware, the disc keeps spinning, showing 0/9 vup. After two hours i finished pulling the plug out. The machine seems totally locked, any thoughts on what i can...

You may have better luck than me -- try unplugging the unit. Wait two minutes. Before plugging it back in, hold down the Open/Close button that ejects the disc. Then plug it in. It may open the door.
