In all operating systems after XP, the CD/DVD is automatically supported by Windows. If you need CD/DVD burning software that came with your computer, you will need to purchase it if you don't have the original disk. There are many on the market.

Dvd player not working

I am not able to understand that you have told about simple dvd player or computer please clear it if it is about computer then detail is here. Go Device Manager and open the tree IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Double click the first channel and select the Advanced Settings tab. You are looking for an entry called ATAPI Cdrom. If it is not on the first channel, close the window and double click the next channel and select the Advanced Settings tab. Repeat this until you see the entry you're looking for. Now close the window with the box displaying ATAPI Cdrom, Right click on the channel you just opened and select uninstall. Again do not delete drivers if asked. Once uninstalled, reboot your PC. I had the computer reset to factory settings and cannot play CD's now. I get a message that says "You don't have a disc drive capable of playing DVD's or CD's. See less

Do you see the CDrom drive from the Device Manager? Right click on My Computer and click Manage. Click Device Manager and on the right panel, expand the DVD/CDROM drives. Check if your cdrom is on the list. If you can see it, try to right click that and Update the driver. You will need to have the installation disk for your cdrom.

If you dont have an installation disk, try to right click it and choose uninstall the drive. Next, you reboot the computer. The system should rediscover the drive.

If this does not work, please let me know.

My cd drive will read cds but not dvds i try to istall somethig it wont work

Hi dkush29306,

while the other two posters have pointed out the obvious, that CDROM drives only read CDs, and that you need a DVD drive to read DVDs, i would like to add something to this.

I will asume you have a CDROM COMBO Drive, that *should* play CDRs and DVDs.

if you find it does spin CDs up and read them, but not DVDs then i might be able to offer some suggestions.

firstly, make sure there is no software conflicts (like two CD Writing softwares trying to use the CD Drive at the same time.. ). you shouldnt have to worry about drivers for the CDROM, as the default OS ones should suffice. but they may be corrupt. you could goto Device Manager if you are on Windows, and uninstall and reinstall the driver for the CDROM. it should find it automatically in the install wizard.

ok at this point i don't see how software could cause any other issue , so we should look at it being a hardware issue:

if you have the ability, try changing the IDE Ribbon Cable that connects the CDROM to the Motherboard. if that doesnt work, try changing which plug in the IDE cable the CDROM plugs into. these plugs usually have a blue plug at one end (motherboard end), and there is two plugs at the other end, or master and slave. keep the jumper pin on the CDROM set to Cable Select, so you dont need to change it to slave, when its plugged into the slave port, or master pin if set to the master port.

finally, if none of that helps (and it probably won't ) you might find that the actual fault is due to the laser in the CDROM not focusing tightly enough and therefore cannot read the data on a DVD ROM because of this. the only way to tell if this is ok or not, is to plug it into another computer and see if it can read DVDs.

you might just be better off spending 20-50$ and buying a new CDROM Combo drive from your local computer hardware store.

You could take the drive out of the encloser and hook it up. There could be a flaw in the enclouser ive had that happen before to me. I just took it out and put it in standard if this dosent work then there is a flaw in the dvd burner

LG GH22 dvd writer - not reading

I had the same problem with the GH22 Internal drive on vista. Assuming this is the only cd drive you have, just go to the device manager and remove/uninstall anything under "DVD/CD Rom Drives" then restart. It should get picked up and recognized properly. It took a couple of restarts to work. For refrence, I only have the LG GH22NP20 installed, what appears in device manager are 2 items... (1)HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 SCSI CdRom Device... (2) KU1051Q EAG855E SCSI CdRom Device... Incase you have multiple cd drives, this should help tell em appart. Enjoy. IDK399

I don't seem to have my cd drive anywhere. It won't play cds anymore....

First see if your CDRom is loaded by the PC by Right clicking on My Computor.Left click on properties at the bottom of the dropdown.A window wil be opened for you-click on Hardware at the top ,double click on Device Manager. When Device Manager opens, check down the list for DVD/CDRom drives-click on the + button to the left of it.You will then see your drives description below DVD/CDRom.Double click on it-a window will be opened telling you whether your drive is working properly or what the problem is.Usually it will be a matter of reloading the driver software or reinstalling the drive. Some times it is advisable to uninstall the first one before you reinstall and remember to restart your PC after the installation. If you dont find your DVD or CDRom in device manager it has 'nt been installed or the driver software corrupted.Happy landing.Georgeo.
