There is a fuel shut off solenoid on the bottom of the carb and it is most likely stuck open. The gravity flow of the fuel causes it to force through the carb, through the intake valve, through the cylinder and then into the oil sump.

B&s engine on mower turned upside down, won't start now.

Take the spark plug out, turn ignition key or pull rope until the engine turns over several times. Let it sit for about 5 or 10 minutes and repeat. Replace the spark plug with a new one. Make sure that your crankcase is not over filled or under filled with oil, and make sure that there is plenty of gasoline in the tank. Make sure that gasoline cap and oil cap are on "securely". Now try to re-start. (The engine may smoke for a while, but it should clear up in a few minutes).

What type of gas to use in a craftsman edger 358.773110

FUELING ENGINE This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a good quality 2-cycle air*cooled engine oil. We recommend Craftsman brand oil. Mix gasoline and oil at a ratio of 40:1 (A 40:1 ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2 ounces of oil with 1 gallon of unleaded gasoline). DO NOT use automotive oil or boat oil. These oils will cause engine damage. When mixing fuel, follow instructions printed on container. Once oil is added to gasoline, shake container momentarily to assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed. Always read and follow the safety rules relating to fuel before fueling your unit.

Oil leak on riding Craftsman LT2000 (Kohler)

Fortunately, the engine oil doesn't go through any rubber hoses, so they are mouse-proof. The oil probably leaked out through an engine seal. Oil on the engine surfaces would smoke when it gets hot. Check your oil level and top it up if necessary, before you run the engine again. The engine can run fine even with a slow oil leak; you just have to watch the oil level from time to time. The leak could be easy to fix - by tightening up a few bolts -- or expensive.
The gas runs through rubber hoses, though. If mice ate through that, I think you would have smelled the gasoline, and the engine wouldn't run for more than a few seconds. But if you see a severed hose, you should replace it. Take it off and bring it to a mower shop or auto supply shop, and buy something the same diameter. Inexpensive.
Hope this helped! If so, please rate my answer, thanks!

Gasoline in the crankcase

If, inside of the carburator the needle and seat does not close (dirt in carb) the fuel will slowly keep pushing through the carb, through the intake into the cylinder then into the crank case.
Do not run this engine until the carb. is rebuilt. The float in the carb.also needs checked to be sure it still floats and its at the exact factory setting.
Also have a new inline fuel filter installed.
Check for dirt in fuel tank.
Keep the air filter clean and in good condition.
I hope this helps you.

Murray riding mower 12.5 hp briggs & stratton spitting oil & gas out of carb & muffler when trying to start

Drain oil... it is full of gasoline due to a bad float pin and rubber gromet in your carb. When your float pin and gromet fail, gas just keeps flowing into your carburetor, eventually flooding your motor with gas and oil mix.

I have a problem a Craftsman 18hp 42 in deck--it stops running.

The problem is called vapor lock. It occurs when the fuel in your supply line is vaporizing just before it gets to the fuel pump and the fuel pump is not designed to pump vapor so you run out of fuel.

Possible solutions are to re-route your fuel line so that it doesn't get hot from the engine and/or run the mower during the cool parts of the day only. It might be as simple as getting some new gasoline as winter bought gasoline will always vapor lock if used in the summer time as they alter the formula for gasoline on weekly basis to stay ahead of vapor lock problems nationwide. Way back when cars were mostly carbureted it was a MAJOR summer time pain. The three options given above remain the best solutions for this ages old problem.
