Question about Dell Latitude D600 Notebook

1 Answer

Laptop freeze My D600 laptop freezes up during bootup (or shortly after). I tried running the diagnostic test with the battery removed but it either hangs up before the test even starts or there is no boot up sequence at all. When I managed to run the Express Test, it hung up 42% of the way through: Stuck on System Memory (Test = MATS). The keyboard is not responsive. Next, I replaced the RAM chip with a good one and saw improvement. Now, it is inconsistent. I now get prompted for a password, but the freeze up occurs as early as when typing in a password to after the system fully loads and trying the first application; sometimes later (I got as far as loading MS Word). Not sure what to try next. My main goal is retrieving data from the hard drive. Any suggestions?

Dropping a laptop is never good news. Have you tried to Cold-Start the laptop, unplug. remove battery, leave battery out for now, plug in try to start normally. If that fails, Did you remove the HDD and reseat? The damage from the drops may have jarred something loose. Do you get activity, light blinking, from the HDD? The DVD/CD?

This sounds like either a hard drive problem, when you power on the laptop there should be an option to enter BIOS or Setup (usually F2) once inside of the BIOS you should be able to run a diagnostic. and that will tell you if there is anything wrong with the hardware. If everything passes that test. you may have some serious Virus problems.

Well firstly, you know apart from viruses,a fair few sites hold malicious code even in video or image form so thats your freezing problem ,most probably, your best bet would be to have it looked at if you cannot manage it further.Manufacturer will have diagnostic equipment /cables/analyzers etc.
At a guess it sounds like a motherboard component.chip failure perhaps which is not necessarily non-user servicable--maybe try a better search for manufacturers site pdf for for you model.
Linux distros are free and auto install ,if you have not luck with windows bang up a linix distro and see what their diagnostics tell you on boot up,things may become clearer-----good luck

I have a problem with my Dell Latitude D600. It only works for a couple of minutes and then freezes up.. is there anything i can do

Two Suggestions :-
1) Test your Hard disk : Restart your Notebook, Go to BIOS Mode and run the HDD Self test
2) Make sure there should not be unncessary programs installed. You can go to start > Run > MSCONFIG and untick the programs you not want to load in your machine. Prefer would be if you uninstll from Add/remove programs.

Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction>

Keeps freezing even after a SYSTEMS RESTORE & disc clen-up and deframentaion...help my daughters online high school test are freezing up during finals. Thanks so much

Systems can freeze for a lot of reasons. Some of them can be the following:
  1. Virus spyware infection.
  2. Hard drive lack of free space.
  3. System over heating
Possible resolutions:
  1. Run antispyware application like MALWAREBYTES available from download.com
  2. Systems need at least 10% of the hard drive free to function normally. If you have less than that free, then uninstall applications or delete files till you do have 10% free.
  3. Run the system on a flat hard surface. Clean out the intake and exhaust vents with canned compressed air.
If issues continue, then you may have hardware issues and run system diagnostics.

HP Lattitude D600 Laptop freezes up

It could be a number of things. . Sometimes the unit will freeze when it overheats.. Have a look around the exhaust vents and see if there is excessive dust built up around there. If you notice any, you may have to take it in to get checked. If you are tech-saavy, then take it apart and clean out the CPU fan. Also make sure that there is good airflow around the vent when operating the unit.

If this is not the case, then you should take some notes to see if there is a trend when this happens. What sort of apps are running when it freezes at the 45 min mark. Is it only on battery? If so, its possible the battery is running out of juice and the software is not throwing the correct warnings - it just freezes the machine (this is exactly what my Asus EEEPC does to me when I let it run wayyy down on the battery - it freezes. However, it warns me a few minutes ahead of time). Try yours on AC and see if it has the same problem. If not, then its likely your battery. You may need to go in and tweak your power management settings to make sure that it warns you when the battery level is low.

UNABLE TO BOOT DELL D600 - FAILURE TO DETECT HARD DISK

If you press F12 during bootup, you should get the boot menu. Run the hard disk diagnostic. If the hard disk is bad, you will get a DST Short Test Error code.

Replacing the hard disk in a D600 is a piece of cake though so if you need a new HD, it's easy to do. The tedious work will come afterward.
