If you're power button lights up but nothing is 'spinning' on the inside, it sounds like a motherboard failure. I would give HP a call to see if this is still under warranty. Since the HP site says this model was introductioned in 2003, I doubt that it is. But it doesn't hurt to check. If not, you'll need to either replace the motherboard yourself, or pay someone to do it for you.

Contact info:

They should also be able to point you in the right direction for instructions on how to replace your motherboard if you need to do this yourself.

Hope this helps! : )

I had this problem with my HP Pavilion DV series laptop. It had to go back and be replaced. It was only 3 months old too. If yours is still under warranty, lodge a "laptop dead" ticket, they'll send UPS to your door and pay all the shipping costs.

If there's any important data on it, you should expect to pay around $70 to a computer shop like Best Buy or Future Shop to have that data recovered. Do that before you send it off, because if they do elect to replace it, the hard drive won't be the same.

No power

There are quite a few possibilities here. Do you leave your computer on while you're not home? If so, it's possible the computer overheated. If that happened, most likely you processor is damaged, and will have to be replaced. There may have been a power surge, which could have damaged the power suppply or the motherboard. It does nothing when you push the button? There's also a remote chance the switch is merely broken... though I can't say I've ever actually seen that happen. If it does absolutely nothing, it's most likely the power supply, however. If the motherboard or processor were bad, it would probably beep when you tried to turn it on. Not definitely, but probably.

I would actually lean a little more towards the power supply being the problem. You can either have someone locally test it for you, or you can buy a power supply tester to check it out.

Dell Inspiron 530 I turns on and nothing happens

1.) If when hitting the power button, ABSOLUTELY nothing happens, no fans come on, nothing- You need a new power supply most likely. I see this all the time in my shop. Here's the bad news- Dell likes to use their own special power supplies, so a normal one may not even fit in the case. If that is the case, then I'm sorry to say Dell likes to charge over $100 easily for a new one.

2.) Fans come on, lights come on, but no screen. This can mean any number of things. Bad VGA cable (or DVI), bad RAM, bad mobo, even a bad PCI card. time to start troubleshooting. Change what parts you can, remove any PCI cards that are not needed, remove one RAM card then the other, etc....

I press the power botton and nothing happens

It's possible that the spring clip behind the power button is broken and won't allow the power button to fully make contact. That's a fairly inexpensive fix. Or, some of the cables/wires could be loose, but I'm thinking (from your description) that it may just be the spring clip.

What does No Power/No POST Troubleshooting mean

Hi.
It refers to two symptoms. No power just means the machine is dead and nothing happens when you press the power button on the computer. POST stands for Power On Self Test. This is what happens just after you press the power button - the computer checks devices connected to it then starts to load Windows or whatever operating system you have. If the computer is dead, then it is often caused by a faulty power supply (metal box where the power cord goes in. If it won't POST then an error may be displayed to tell you where it stopped during POST, or error beeps may sound to tell the technician which part of POST has failed. Sometimes, you may hear the fans and hard disk, but the monitor stays dead. This is usually caused by the RAM coming loose in it's socket or the video card coming loose/ failing.
