Hi, according to the user manual for the Craftsman 19.5hp 42" deck lawn tractor (model #247.28902), you should use SAE 30 oil (which you can get at most local hardware stores). However, if you'll be using the tractor in weather colder than 32 degrees Fahrenheit, 5W20 oil will help it start up better.
The manual doesn't list the oil capacity for the tractor, it only says you should keep it full and check it with the dipstick regularly. A user on Answers.com said their tractor takes 48 ounces according to the sticker on their tractor, or 3 pints according to their version of the manual.
The latest copy of the manual (dated February 15th, 2010) doesn't state that information, however, so you might be better off looking for the sticker on your tractor, either on or under the hood. You can download a free PDF copy of the user manual from ManualsOnline.com.
You should change the oil and replace the oil filter after every 50 hours of use (or once per season).
If the sticker doesn't show the oil capacity, you can call Craftsman to ask them at 1-800-659-5917. (They may ask for some basic information about your tractor first.)
Hope that helps!
