The initialising smart drive that is normally displayed on the handbox during start up is not showing and the scope is not moving at all - it then displays daylight savings >no as expected but is not correctly aligned.

Its not batteries as it is mains powered. I thought it might be connections too and reseated them all. It actually now does the initialisation of the smart mount as before but does not display the action on the handbox. I am going to purchase a new handbox connector.

Hello. Your problem may simply be that the cable connections have a bit of oxidation on them. To remove this go to any autoparts store and get an aerosol can of electrical contact cleaner. Follow the instructions on the can.

That said, if the steps above do not solve the problems, you may have to go to the meade instruments website and download the latest software http://www.meade.com/support/index.html

I'm wondering if this is a battery related issue- the 8 C cells have an expected life of about 20 hrs, and they may need changing, or the contacts might need cleaning. Not sure if you've tried new batteries, so that might be the first thing to try.
I would connect and reconnect all cords and connections, just to make sure they're tight and secure (sometimes reconnecting connectors "remakes" a critical connection).
Other than doing those things, there is not much else I can think of that the user can do, which means the unit will have to be troubleshot and serviced.
Here is Meade's website, and if you contact support, they may have some ideas of what is going on, and what might be failing. It seems this issue is software related, but hardware failures can look the same, so someone with experience will have to determine the issue.
Here is Meade's support site:

Good luck, and hope it's just a loose connector.

Smart failure.. bootmgr is missing..I have recovery discs but dvd player is not working

Yes, you can make USB boot drive. However main problem is the Smart... error. It is your hard drive. You need to fix that first! Try reseating the drive. Next go into BIOS by pressing F key during boot. Might be F2? Make sure BIOS recognizes the hard drive.

Once you get the drive going again, you can start the install / repair again. USB drive tool.

Then it is an internal circuit board issue. Something is either unplugged inside the scope base-- or is burned out. Meade can repair these call them:

Lit up Autostar II handbox, red backround but no words, bought new one same thing.buttons work normally but I am running blind-HELP!

Try replacing the cable with a new one. www.scopestuff.com sells the cable.

If this does not work you have something wrong with the circuit board inside the scope.

Also check and see if the CONTRAST and BRIGHTNESS is set wrong. Look at the manual for the "tree" that shows all the features. You will have to guess at which buttons to press to get to the Contrast and brightness adjustments -- just follow the "tree" diagram. This could also be your problem.

Finally you can try just a RESET of the hand controller if the above is too difficult. Easier to get too in the "tree". You can also try reloading the firmware, which requires NO BUTTONS to be pressed.

Other than the above the scope will need to be returned to Meade for repairs if nothing works -- try all of the above first before you panic.

On a meade ETX 90RA Premier edition

Contact Meade and see what they charge to CLEAN the telescope:

I seem to remember it was about $100 plus shipping. The 80 is a completely different telescope style-- the 90mm is a Maksutov Telescope.

I have a frozen autostar 497 handbox, can it be reset or saved? While doing an update, the updater program window asked if the handbox was in ''safe mode'' (I think it was something like that), I clicked...

Turn off the scope and plug in your computer update cable.

While holding down the ENTER key and the Scroll DOWN ARROW key on the bottom, turn the scope on.

The controller will go into Safe Load mode-- redo your update again.

Disk error searching for boot rercord from CDROM not found

Hi rmirish,

The hard drive has built in SMART diagnostics to check itself to make sure all is well. If the SMART is showing status BAD then the hard drive is either either starting to go out. Your best bet is to try to backup any data (if you have any) on the hard drive and replace the hard drive.

Hope that helps,

Take care,

Michael

Meade Autostar handbox

removeformat.gifBecause this is a new purchase i would suggest getting the handbox replaced under warranty. If the guy was rude, then mention this to their management. There have been quite a few prolems with meade gear on our site here. Handbox included.
If you are up to it you can open it up. if so inspect the board for damage, shorts or loose solder joints. Some of these things can be repaired, some cannot. On this last statement it would seem sensible to get the replacement then start again from scratch. I have found about 7 recent problems with this unit, so be aware this is not a fault free unit.
