Question about Dell Precision T5500 PC Desktop

2 Answers

Hello, I have a T5500 with 2 x Nviida Quadro FX580 cards in both x16 slots . Is it possible to add a GTX460/470 card to use the CUDA Cores/GPU's for 3D. Can I move the 580 card from slot 4(x16) into slot 1 (which is 8x slot) and place the new gtx460/470 into slot 4 - as it is a double width card and could not fit elsewhere ? This means I have 3 x cards. Can this work without conflict, or do I need an external PCIe expansion unit ? Please respond ASAP. Thank you very much !

    Thanks for your help.

I am trying to avoid external expander due to cost. this way all I need is new card !

So just to be clear - i would have the following:

    1 x Quadro FX580 Nvidia card in Slot no.2 (x16) and 1 in slot no.1 (wired as x8)

    1 x Nvidia GTX460/470 in Slot no.4 (x16)

To change configuration do I turn machine off and switch 580 cards first, then boot and machine auto configs ? then do I Turn off, and install new GTX460/470 card with drivers and re-boot.?

    Thanks again !

Hello

3 cards, all from Nvidia, will work together in a system without big conflicts. If you had Nvidia card and one ati card then you would have problems.

It depends on the motherboard, of which I haven't found details yet. But you can place the new card in the X16 slot, the 2nd card in the 2nd x16 slot and the 3rd will work on the x8 slot aslong as the connector fits.

Can you see a model / brand on the motherboard when you open it? I couldn't find its details from dell so far to confirm.

to install the new adapter you would turn off the machine, unplug etc.

Remove all the nvidia cards. Place the main video adapter to the top most slot of 16x, then the 2nd adapter to the other 16x and the 3rd card into the x8.

Nvidia drivers will automatically install all 3 cards, the source of display output may be strange until drivers are installed and desktop - screen resolutions are configured.

basically what I mean is that if you have more than one display, you might be getting primary picture out from a secondary display instead of your ? Bigger ? main display.

Hello,

yes, it is possible and there won't be any conflict. You can add the GTX460/470. Since the space is available on your CPU, you can go ahead and use it.

But in case the GTX460/470 is not compatible, there might be conflict. In this case, you can use the external PCI expansion unit.

In summary, the GTX460/470 will work, but you never can tell, your CPU might not find it compatible and this will cause conflict. But if it don't work fine you can use plan B which is external PCI expansion unit.

I hope you understand the above.

Good luck.

Which gpu's are compatible with this motherboard

Nvidia and AMD (formally ATI) are chip makers for video cards. Your slot is PCI-e x16, which is good because it may allow physically smaller cards to be inserted. Don't think about the size since your's is x16, but rather the version of PCI-e.

So, if your slot is PCI-e x16 version 1. Don't purchase a version 2 card. It is not compatible. On the other, hand if you have a PCI-e x16 version 2 you can add ver 1 or ver 2 card. The slot is backward compatible.

Hope this make sense and is not too confusing.

$ this is a serious problem it is general that high end GPU s get hotter with the amount of graphic intensive work you do.
$look if the GPU's run cooler in windows vista or seven just for your experience
$look for some other cooling methods like moving it into a Air conditioned room or try installing a water cooling system for the GPU's you can get it online for a reasonable price

You should not have a problem doing that. Your motherboard has a PCI Express X16 slot available. If you have problems when running intensive gaming then you may need to upgrade your PSU to a higher watttage. The 9800 GT is very power hungry. One problem you may have is that if your computer is a HP Slimline there might not be enough room inside the case for that card and you might need a low profile graphics card.

I have a P5VD2-MX motherboard, currently I have a Geforce 7900GS.

Hi!

Since there is 1 PCI Express x16 slot you can use any PCI Express GPU, like Asus GeForce GTX 260 896MB PhysX CUDA, EVGA GeForce 9800GT 512MB PhysX CUDA, Gainward GeForce 9800GT 512MB PhysX CUDA or whatever you want as long as it is a PCI EPRESS card.

Good luck

Dose hp xw8200 support nvidia 8800gtx

That computer can handle an 8800GTX because it does have 1 PCIe x16 slot for it, which is what the card requires. It also should have enough power for that card as well. I imagine the Quadro is in the PCIe x16 slot though so you have to choose which card to use, not both.

Quadro cards are for workstations that are for 3D modeling and things of that nature. They are very expensive graphics cards but do not play games all that well. I imagine the 8800GTX would play games better, and certainly run Crysis if the resolusion and settings are not on HIGH.
