Question about Behringer Pmp3000 16 Channel Audio Mixer

1 Answer

When I plug in my XLR microphone to my Behringer PMP3000 it only works on the Main/Mon function not the Main L/R function, and when it is working it only amplifies through one speaker. WHY???

Check if the PAN control for that channel is set at 12 o'clock position.

You can "pan" the mic to either L or R speaker or anything between.

On the Main/Mon setting, the level sent to the Mon side is controlled ONLY by the Mon level pot for that channel.

The pan is at 12 O'Clock and still only amplification through one speaker on the Mon/Main setting... The pan does nothing on this setting...

On the Main L/R setting there is no amplification what so ever through any of the channels both 1/4 inputs and XLR inputs. Theoretically if I plug a mic in and the mixer is on the Main L/R setting it should work right? It is registering on the LED level on the right of the mixer that sound is being produced but it seems as though it is not getting any further than the mixer itself as I cannot record anything either. When I plug in an external source (ie. Ipod) into the output RCA connections I can get amplification through both speakers with complete control. I am totally stumped! Possible blown channel perhaps???

  • Fred Yearian Oct 08, 2010

Oh, oh... I know this symptom... I suspect one channel is blown... Usually the rear-most one... I think it is the "A" channel.

IF YOU GET NOTHING from that side of the amp CEASE using the amp and get it repaired immediately. The reason is that further damage can be done if it arcs and wipes the power supply as well as that side of the amp.

THERE IS A WEAK INSULATION CONDITION BETWEEN LAYERS OF THE MULTI-LAYER CIRCUIT BOARD and when it arcs between layers it wipes out three switching transistors and usually a Zener diode. The repair of the module is extensive and if under warranty just take it in for repair. IF further shorts occur it can wipe the power supply out causing a loss of anothe $30 of parts and a couple hours to replace them.

If you still get speaker output from both outs, then the amp is probably OK.

I have repaired 4 of these myself and it takes hours to carve out the "cancer" and replace the parts and install jumpers.

Also please read my tip on Fixya regarding a hazard of speaker polarity. You can wipe out the on side amp in an instant due to the hazard.

Suspected as much, however like I said in the above email when I plug in an external source to the output RCA's it goes hard! Full amplification to both speakers with full EQ optimisation with PAN control, effects, the works... It is only when I plug anything into the input channels... Possible input channels blown???? Thanks so much for your input fredy2!!!!

Hi Fredy, you have had a go at solving the problem with my PMP3000 mixer but I am still having dramas. I will run through what is going on and if you could offer any advise that would be wonderful!

OK, if I plug the PMP3000 in to the wall, hook up the 2 Phonic SE725 speaker cabinets (Speakon to 1/4) and plug an external source (ipod/computer) into the OUTPUT RCA connections I have full use of the EQ, FX, BAL, FAD the works, on the Main L - Main R function.... Then if I disconnect the external source and plug in anything (mic/guitar etc) into any of the input sources I get no sound output. However I do get recognition of the sound generation on the LED level display.

If I then switch the mixer to the Mon1 - Mono function I can get sound output from the Mon1 level through one speaker, nothing else. CAN YOU HELP???

A huge thankyou for your time. The mixer is not under warranty and I would like to be able to go to an electrical engineer and tell him exactly what the problem is and possibly even source the parts so as to keep cost to a minimum.

  • Fred Yearian Oct 11, 2010

OK, I have schematics for the PMP series... The schematics cover MANY pages and tracing out the signal path is tricky... HOWEVER, since the display seems to be working and the channel is not, this comes down to a very small area that can be the trouble. The MOST LIKELY thing is a failure or dirt in the configuration switch that selects Mono/Mon, MAIN L and R and bridged mode. This switch selects the signals sent to the power amps but there are more than one path that merge here. This would be a real pain to access to replace or repair... IF it happened to be bad solder on the circuit board one could probably do that by taking the shield panel off the back of the mixer board... this is still a lot of work...

Please read my tip on the PMP amps regarding speaker polarity and a grounding hazard in the tips on here. One can wipe out one channel in an instant.
I want you to try something first: Procure some CRC226 from Home Depot in the electrical dept. With the spout, spray a tiny bit into that switch and work the switch ... do this a couple times and see if it just might come back working... use ONLY CRC226 in the blue can. It is also good to repair noisy slider/faders and pot.

If you still can't get it to work, let me know and we will go further.

What is the best way to connect an external EQ or Feedback Destroyer unit to a Behringer PMP3000

Get an "insert snake" which splits each of two TRS plugs into TWO TS plugs.
Plug the TRS ends into the MAIN INSERT jacks and each of the "TIP" plugs at the other end into inpout jacks of the destroyer. Plug the "RING" plugs into the output jacks of the destroyer. You will need a snake with at least two sets of splits. I use a Behringer PROCOM compressor. For those the TRS plugs go into the channel insert jacks and the tips and ring plugs go to the in and out of each channel of the compressor respectively.

Our Behringer pmp 6000 just recently mysteriously lost both monitor 1 & 2 signals. Please provide some suggested resolutions? Is there anything other then the channel monitor level knobs and the main...

Try plugging in a set of headphones into each of the mon left and right. If the monitor sliders are up AND the channel monitor knobs are up you should be able to hear in ONE SIDE only of the headphones. If not, then you may have failed to power your monitor amp or speakers from the SAME receptacle as the mixer and this can result in ground bouncein building wiring that will blow out the driver chips for the mon signals.

I have a Behringer PMP 6000 that I just bought. With the power amp switch in Main L/Main R it works fine, but if I switch it to Main/Mon, only the Mon works, nothing from the Main. Bridge mode doesn't...

Bridge mode you use chan B (left connector on the back) using a SPECIALLY wired Speakon. The impedance of a speaker connected as such CANNOT be LESS than 8 ohms.

In the Main/Mon mode, the two amplifiers are separated in function. The monitor knobs for EACH channel input control the mix sent to Channel A which is for the monitor speakers. The Mon1 controls the level sent to Output A for the monitor speakers. Mon2 fader is NOT used.

The individual channel faders control the main mix and the Main fader controls the level sent to Output B which goes to the main speakers.

Can I hook up 2 separate power amps to PMP3000? I

Better way... Connect the main speakers via the Speakons and then put a Power Subwoofer to one of the Monitor connections IF you are not using both stage monitors. If you need to kill the lows to the mains, use the EQ in the PMP-3000.

Use the EQ that is USUALLY on the subwoofer to kill the highs to the sub.

Lot less cables and hardware.

REMEMBER for equipment safety, power ALL interconnected equipment from the same source be it a receptacle or power distribution system.

Powering parts of a system from receptacles strewn around a room is asking for trouble of ground loops and ground faults.

I have recently purchased a Behringer Eurolive 1800 sub, what outs or sends do I use on my mx3242x to the amp

You use the balanced MAIN outputs. They are XLR and you should run those on balanced lines to your AMP which should have EITHER XLR inputs or TRS balanced 1/4 inch jacks to receive them.

DO NOT use mono inputs on your amp... make sure they have balanced inputs.

Note, for SAFETY of your equipment, ALWAYS power any connected stuff from teh same receptacle or power distribution system.

I have 2 channels that do not respond. Both the xlr or 1/4 input won`t transmit.

I assume you mean the input channels.

Things to check:

1. Do the sliders work smoothly or do they have rough spot?

2. Is the trim (top knob) turned up?

3. Are the gain controls for the mix turned up? Try turning up the mon controls on the dead channels and see if they come through the Mon outputs. Try turning up the FX inputs and see if they reach the FX level sensing.

4.Are the pan controls set center? Mutes off?

5. Has any liquid been spilled into the unit?

6. Has an "accident" occured such as driving the inouts with a high voltage or something with a ground loop? Has something smashed down on the slider knobs? (this sometimes breaks the resistance element in the sliders or cracks the board.

A reasonable amount of troubleshooting can be done from the available outputs and some of the above things may seem silly, but with all the options on these units it is easy to overlook something.

Brand new mixer pmp3000 and two brand new speakers (passive) new cables.. plugged in mic , signal is shown but no sound out of the speakers. why????

Make sure the slider switch is set to the correct mode.

The TRIM controls must be advanced while the sliders are at 70%.

A common problem is to MISTAKENLY plug 1/3 inch input cable into the Effects Insert jacks instead of the inout IF you use 1.4 instead of XLR inout.

Make sure the channels of interest are NOT muted!

I have a beringer eoropower pmp 5000. i run my mains and monitors in mono how do i turn the volume up for my monitors

With the AB switch at the center position Mon1/Main you control the volumes INDIVIDUALLY with the MON pot for each input that is a couple positions above each of the input sliders.

Trim pots on Behringer PMP3000 don't change consistently

Make sure you are plugging the inputs into the inputs and NOT the inserts. It is easy to get them wrong and put them into the insert jack right below the correct one!

You don't say if you are using XLR or 1/4 connectors. If you are using XLR, then verify that your source has the ground to the cable.

Use headphones to see if they act the same as your mains before doing anything else.

Make sure your speaker leads are correct and you are NOT set to bridged mode on the slide switch. The switch should be clear up to L/R.
