I checked the Canon website and the message you get can either be in the document handler or in the machine. I am including a link to the Canon website that discusses this problem. Let me know if it helps.

THE PRINTER IS GIVING THE MESSAGE" ORIGINALS LEFT ON GLASS" BEFORE GIVING YOU A CHANCE TO COPY OR SCAN THE DOCUMENT

Actually copier is telling the problem- Originals left on glass. That is document sensor is dirty or blocked. Hence copier is giving message. Clean sensor or refer to qualified service.

It says there is a document jam and to clear scanner but there is not paper in the machine. What do I do?

This error message is displayed by the printer when paper is jammed in one or more locations. In such a case, users are recommended to remove the jammed paper from the specified location. The entire paper path must be checked for any pieces of paper. To stop the message, open and close the top most cover of the printer. Lastly, verify the flags and the sensors. If the problem persists, the cause of the error message could be a broken sensor or sensor lever.

Document too long error message during 2 sided print job

clean all paper pick up, feed and separation rollers. That means that paper is "late" on sensors.
But you also should check the sensor flappers. If they are worn out replace them, the problem also can be the flapper of registration sensor.

you will almost certainly have a torn piece of paper ( or small document) in the document feeder sitting over a sensor. It doesn't need to be very big to be detected.Open ALL covers on the feeder, check particularly at the edges of the feed area where you may have torn a corner off.Sometimes you can hand feed a piece of card through by turning the belt or rollers and push any obstruction out..........

It thinks there is a document stuck in the document handler. Check for a small piece of paper, or a stuck sensor.

Add paper message

you will be glad to know, this is not your printer's fault. We went round and round with dell support when we first got 150 dell 1600n's. We sent in copies of documents that were causing the problem. Finally, they figured it out for us. Embedded in the document was junk that was telling the printer to pull from tray2. All you have to do to fix the problem, is take the word document, go into file, page setup. on paper tab, select default tray for first page, default tray for all other pages, and apply to whole document. to clear the message, you will have to delete the print job from the queue, and turn off the printer, then turn back on, and you should be set. The message add paper, is really what the printer should be telling you, except that it should add to tray2, so you know it is trying to pull paper from the manual sheetfeed port on the front.(you could add paper there, till the document finishes printing, but our docs are hundreds of pages, so that is not practical. I had the same problem with mine. Lift the top scanner, and check the hinges on the left. That error message means that the little black sensor on the left next to the hinges is not meeting flat with the unit when closed. Hold the sensor in for a few seconds, and your printer will start working properly.
