Question about Nikon Coolpix S210 Digital Camera

1 Answer

My Nikon S210 is not focusing correctly. It's just recently started to act in this manner. I had a 'lens error' screen this summer after getting some sand in the lens from my pocket and I beat that one by 100's of 'on' then 'off' attempts and removing the battery when it wouldn't turn off. Literally a couple hundred times over the course of a week and it finally came around and started operating correctly. I've taken maybe 50 pictures since then and kept the camera in it's case when in my pocket. Now I've got this focusing error and I haven't figured out any means of curing the problem as of yet...any suggestions?

Validae; i got the back case off. I got the viewer glass retainer plate off, then I chickened out....put her back together and it's still off it's correct focus by just enough to make things blurry. I'm going down into the guts again tomorrow and see what it takes to release the front cover...how many more screws have I got to go?

Try to open the front case and blow compressed air to the lens barrel. It seems that your camera is full of sand inside.

How do open the front case?

  • barrysanford Oct 04, 2010

validae; are we talking about 5 phillips screws that hold the two halves together?

  • validae Oct 06, 2010

remove all the visible screws but try to make some photos from time to time , with a mobile phone with camera from example, that will help you to remember how to put all together lately.
Do nor force anything, the cases must come out without effort if you remove all screws.Look even under the TV out or USB outlets covers, there may be some screws.Look under the battery case, some cameras have even there one screw.Sorry if i delay to answer toyou but i am so busy.

Validae, thanks for getting back to me; I appreciate the encouragement!
I popped off the lens cover by accident while following someonelse's strategy for dealing with a 'lens error' problem. What I've noticed is that the image in the viewer actually gets fuzzier as you depress the button to take the picture and with the lens cap off, you can actually see a subtle movement deep in the inards of the lens. Makes me think I've got an internal problem that's beyond the sand in the lens barrel issue. Don't know at this point; I need great peace of mind when attempting these dissections and, like you, have lots going on at this time of year. Ttyl. Barry

You are now in the point of no return. You may solve the problem, or you can smash the camera to the ground. Believe me, i was in this situation many times. But if you keep all the parts of your camera in a box, do not panic!. Leave the problem for a time, look on Google for more solutions, and when you will be ready, you will fix this camera. I have a Nikon coolpix S210. When I try to turn on....the lense wont move and then the screen shows lens error. I cant do anything but turn it off.

Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

Try repeatly turning on and off the unit by removing the battery each time the lens error screen pops up...that worked for me this summer when mine S210 got jammed with a sand particle. The next level is to get access to the front cover. That requires more knowledgethan I'm currently aware of as I've only removed the back cover and the LCD retainer plate. Tomorrow I'm going after the front cover and I'll let you know if I'm successful. The entire camera seems to be accessible with a small phillips head screwdriver and a lot of patience. Taking apart an S210 requires great peace of mind...don't go in until you're in a good space...

Nikon Coolpix Lens Error

Hi!
It could be focus system problem - most likely stuck. Could be sand or some dirt inside focus gears. They're very small for these lens which are used in many Nikon, Olympus, Casio and other cameras so even one small piece of sand can block the focus system. The only way to fix it to take the camera and lens apart and clean it.

Sorry for the bad news. I repair cameras every day and you can trust me - I know what I'm talking about.

Hi!
It sounds like the lens focus is stuck. If you don't have experience in camera repairs, you should give it for a repair to your local Nikon service center or other camera service center.

S210 Lens Error

Try jiggling the lens. Use compressed air to blow out any grit around the lens barrel. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to get the camera serviced or replaced.

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
