Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 (M01E100) 100 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a Maxtor 3100 100gb external HD and tried to backup my computer and it would only backup 4gb. I got a message that if the HD is formatted in FAT32 it would only backup 4gb. I need to backup about 35gb. How do I format the Maxtor so I can back up the 35gb. Thanks

1. Please connect you external HD to your computer
2. Fat32 can only handle a limited amount of data
3.Go to the Control Panel
4. Open up Administrative Management
5. Open Computer Management
6. Open Disk Management
7. In the denter panel you will see your Maxtor expressed
8. Right click on the drive
9. Click format
10. Choose NTFS
if not given the coice, it will usually format to NTFS anyway, but get smart, explore Disk Management and make sure
11. I'm giving a general scenario across 3 different Windows OS Sytems

That's because the software it comes with unlocks the drive to do backups. You should be able to format the drive in windows and then it should work fine for your purposes.
Right Click the Drive, Select Format, give it a volume name if you want and select quick format. Leave everything else default.

From My Computer the External Hard Drive can be reformatted.
I beleive the format is called TFMS, this allows a larger than 4Gb single entry to be inputted. It is probably formatted for FAT32 which is limited to 4Gb units

Cannot get external hard drive to work

- Make sure that the hard drive (HD) is properly connected to the computer.

- Try connecting it to a different computer to make sure that the HD is the problem.

- Check the Disk Management in your computer to see if the HD could still be detected. Once detected, reformat the HD and it should work again.

To check the Disk Management:

NOTE: Make sure that the external HD is connected and turned ON.

1. Right-click "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" icon (Vista)
2. Select Manage and click on "Disk Management".
3. From the Disk Management, you will see a drive letters
4. Write down all the drive letters and then disconnect the Maxtor HD from the computer.
5. If there's a drive letter that disappears, then that is your Maxtor HD.
6. Reconnect the Maxtor HD and reformat it. You may right-click the drive letter and there's an option to format the HD.

If you're hearing a clicking sound while the HD is turned on, mostly, it's already defective.

Have a great day!
