Question about Cameras

1 Answer

I have been using my Quantaray 70-300mm lens with my Canon Rebel SLR that i purchased about 3 years ago. Recently, I started to get an Error 99 message when I try to take a shot with this lens. I have attempted to clean the contacts with a pencil eraser and I thought that this worked since I was able to take about 15 shots and then it started again. Any ideas of what is going on?

Quantaray lens

You did not mention which lens. Some Canon digital cameras will only take EFS lens, others take both EF and EFS. Also there are other types of lens mounts made by Canon.

Error 99 all the time , 1 yr old ...started it about 2 months after i bought it

Hum, error 99 eh? Canon's catch all error code, there is a ton of little entities that can cause error 99 from using third party lenses, batteries and even grips but, it all comes back to an electric contact fault. By using a good clean new pencil one with the red rubber eraser most of the error 99 problems can be quickly for lack of words erased. The most obvious problem area if you camera is not fitted with a battery grip is the lens contacts between it and the body of the camera.
Remove the lens, put the body cap on the camera when you are doing this part and while holding the lens as vertical as possible with the contacts down lightly rub the cold contacts. You can use a lens tissue and blow bulb/puffer to remove loose rubber. While you are at it clean all your lenses and put the rear lens cap on while not in use.
Okay the body, it's not as easy but doable, remove the body cap keeping the lens mount and open cavity pointing downward. Lightly rub the body contacts well but also gently, clean any rubber away from the contacts using a lens tissue. Don't use the bulb/puffer as it will blow eraser dust into the camera and possibly cause flecks of dirt to adhere to the sensor.
Once clean reinstall your lens and go do some photography.
Other things that cause this annoying error 99 are grip contacts, battery and recently I got into an error problem and my fix was updating to new camera firmware. That problem took me while on an assignment and would have been embarrassing except my back up was a "Rebel". Winding down the shoot the Rebel started with this error 99. Once back to the studio I did the updates and cleaned every lens I had. Cheers Happy New Year have fun make lots of pictures.

I have the same problem. So far I've contacted Sigma (I believe this is the company that manufacturers the Quantaray lens for Ritz) and they requested I send them a photo of the lens. I just googled sigma lens to find sigma support. I will update you all with any response I may get.

Lens

Quantaray is a private label lens made for Ritz Camera. They make this lens to fit several different camera brands including Nikon and Canon. The only ones that will fit a Canon camera body are the ones with the Canon EOS mount. If your Quantaray lens doesn't have an EOS mount, then it won't work on your Canon camera. You can take the lens to any Ritz Camera location and they can help determine which mount it has, and which cameras it will fit.

Quantary 100-300mm telephoto lense

I have been researching this problem and found there's nothing you can do. Appararently, the quantaray, being an older lens, wasn't made to work with this latest era of cameras. Though it might work perfectly with your older camera, its technology is outdated as it relates to digital cameras and can't mesh with the latest and greatest. By the way, most of my questions were answered on the Digital Camera Resource page (www.dcresource.com)

I have a 100-300mm Quantaray lense and have the exact same issue. I spoke to Canon about this and they suggested cleaning the contacts. That helps for 1 picture. You would have to remove the lense and rub the contacts between each picture. Not a good plan. They suggested the Quantaray may have a fix or repair for the lense and to contact them. However they have no listed 800 number nor any website. only other suggestion is to contact a camera shop and see if they can service the lense. Only other option is to replace it.
