My Hornettek 1TB external hard drive has a fan that has recently started making a loud buzzing noise. Is the fan replaceable? Also is there a way to disable the fan without causing heating issues for the HD?

Disabling the fan will cause heat issues , a replacement fan
fron the manufacturer or a universal from tiger direct
will work.
be sure no dust or debris is causing the noise first.

Never disable the hard drive fan, however try to clean it and be sure that air can enter into it.

I advice you also to do a hard drive backup in case the problem persists.

Dell Dimension E520 Hard drive constantly buzzing

This could be a sign of a failing hard drive - I would backup all of your important documents immediately to an external drive to prevent you from losing any important data.

As you have already cleaned out the dust , there is a chance that one of the system fans (or the CPU fan) may be faulty or some wires inside your system case might be catching on the fan while it is spinning.

Disconnect all the system fans , so just the CPU fan is left plugged in and then switch on the system and see if the noise has stopped. Then plug each fan back in one at a time to identify if any of them are causing the noise.

I have a Lacie 1TB Big Disk Extreme. It has recently developed a loud regular whirring noise, that goes on and off every few seconds. What should I do? Thanks! Adrian

The irregular clicking or chunking sound usually indicates that your hard drive is suffering from physical damage. immediately backup your data, your hard disk will die soon.

This problem can be caused by the following:

  • Head Crash
  • Bad Sectors
  • Mechanical Faults

If your hard disk is under warranty then you contact your manufacturer.
Hard disk drive occasionally produces a whirring sound when it searches for a file which is heavily fragmented. This is caused by the spinning platters as the read-write heads zoom back and forth to access the sectors where the data is stored. It is important to distinguish the whirling sound from the clicking sound. This whirring sound can be reduced by periodically defragmenting your hard drive. Defragmenting reorganizes the scattered data on the hard drive to make files and programs run faster. It relocates the commonly accessed files to the beginning of the hard disk where data can load at a faster rate.

Computer noise

More likely one of the fans, but could be the hard drive. Open the case and listen. Fan on power supply, fan on processor, or hard drive are the most likely sources of the noise. Processor fans and power supplies are both cheap and easy to replace. Hard drive is a bit more expensive and you must back it up (which you already regularly do, right?) if you want to keep your data.

I would suggest you back up all your data as the hard drive appears to be failing. i presume you are certain it is coming from the hard drive and not a fan ?
