Pull straight down on the rope and release. Then you should be able to run the opener and the two halves of the trolley will click together. Sometimes you need move the door by hand to get this done. The grinding noise is most likely the drive gear stripping. Remove the cover from the motor unit and it should be obvious.

Garage door opener trolley keeps shearing off. Had it replaced a year ago, and I noticed that it is making a grinding noise and I can see it is halfway sheared off again.

issue with counterbalance springs. when you release trolley, door should balance at half way open. if i rises all the way on its own, or falls closed, then the springs are an issue and motor and trolley are working very hard in one direction or the other.

How do i fix garage door that wont open or close?

You have to make sure the trolley on the drive engages with the catch on the door. You may have to lift the door to the point it will engage while you are running the trolley in the close mode. Check that the trolley latch is open and ready to engage the catch. There is usually a rope to pull on to do this.

Sears garage door opener model 139.53919

The torsion springs might need adjustment.

Pull emergency release, and manually lift door to half-open position.

When you release the door, it should stay in place.
If it almost "slams" down, the springs are not doing their job to "balance" the weight of the door itself.
The opener isn't designed to overcome the weight of the unsupported (no spring assist) door.

Over time, the springs take a "set", and might need a readjustment
The springs are under tremendous pressure loading, and can even kill someone if they do not know what they are doing!

Replaced the mini belt without incident, actually pretty easy to do. Reinstalled the unit onto the screw and hung in place. Reinserted the wires by color and plugged in the power. The rack and connected...

Start over by removing the belt.

Release the door from the trolley.

Then slide the door/trolly latch mechanism toward the motor assy half way,

Reinstall the belt but not the door to the trolley.

Ativate the remote and where the door stops, assuming it is closing , is the lower/closed limit.

Remove the belt, again.

Then side the door latch mechanism near the end of the trolley.

Reinstall the belt and activate the remote.

It should be close enough to fine tune using the limit switches.

My craftsman automatic garage door opener made an odd humm noise after I pushed the button and it stopped opening. I helped it open up. after pushing the button again to go down, it just made the same...

Hello. Plug the motor back in but do not attach the door to the trolley. See if the motor runs the trolley up and down. Also manually run the door up and down a few times to check and see if there is anything binding. If there is binding, find the problem, often a loose wheel, also grease the track and lube the wheels with WD-40 penetrating oil. Finally, if the motor runs the trolley up and down with no problem but bawks when the door is attached to the trolley your motor is on it;'s last legs and needs to be replaced. J.

Craftsman garage door opener 1/2 hp will not open door

It sounds like your chain is out of sync with the limit switches. Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor unit. Now run the opener until the sprocket runs counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything attached and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. You are now in sync. You may need to tweak the up and down limit controls which are on the side of the motor unit.

Garage door opens all the way only closes half way down

Some of your comments look like they're missing but from what I can see you had to put chain back on and now the door doesn't close all the way.take the cover off and look at the limit switch, this the travel adjustment. The switch for the close side is making contact too soon so it shuts off early. You need to adjust contacts so its further away. Depending on where the trolley was when you reattached the chain, you might not be able to adjust it back enough. But try it first. If you still come up short you will have to take the chain back off and move the trolley back to where the door would be closed and reattach chain. now open position will probably need adjustment leave door unhooked and just let trolley move in case it over shoots the mark either way.
