Question about Filter Queen Majestic Canister Vacuum

1 Answer

The brush attachment always slows when it hits carpet. I've replaced belts and it just doesn't do what its supposed to. I doesn't seem to work very well. If the brush isn't moving how could it move the dirt to be picked up. My wife wants me to dump it and get something different and I still believe in its abilities, I think it just needs work. Micron filtration is no longer in business and I can't find a dealer to help. I think I just need a new brush assembly.

One thing you might want to try is to see if the brush itself is binding up at the ends. When dirt gets in the end pieces and makes the brush difficult to spin, it will slow down, add to that the contact with the carpet and it may slow down even more. Give the brush and axle a good cleaning to see if it works better. Add a bit of WD40 to the ends of the brush axle.

Is the brush always supposed to turn, even when upright?

I have a similar Hoover upright and the brush roller continues to revolve even with the handle locked and the hose detached for direct pickup. Seems rather odd to wear out the carpet that way.

Dc41animal leaves obvious tracks on beige carpet

Hi Alan, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like all Dyson upright vacuums, DC41 Animal includes a motor-driven rotating brush bar. This includes stiff nylon bristle tufts which sweep into the carpet pile, agitating out dust, grit and stubborn pet hair. This will also have the effect of raising the carpet pile where it's been trodden down from daily use - this is what causes the tracks you've noticed. You can see how DC41's brush bar and cleaner head are engineered to work in the video I've attached.

It is possible to turn off the brush bar using the silver brush control switch next to the red on/off switch. However, the brush bar is an important factor in effective carpet cleaning and we would always recommend vacuuming carpets with the brush bar turned on - with the exception of delicate carpets or rugs.

It does sound like your machine is working correctly, in the way it was designed. I hope this information is useful to you, but if you would like some further advice, please give us a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).

Best wishes,

Burnt rubber smell when vacuuming

This could be a few things:

A. If your model has a floor selector switch (Bare floor/tools - Carpet) your clutch could be worn. (there is a rubber clutch pad between your cam and roller shell) - Fix would be to replace the clutch pad and belt.

B. If you don't have one of the above models, your belt could be stretched. The belt slipping could cause a rubber burning smell. Fix - Change belt.

C. Have you got any new carpet you are vacuuming or have you moved? Some of the newer style frieze carpets can cause burning rubber smell. The fibers of the carpet are longer and cause the brush to slow down causing the belt to burn. (Imagine brushing long hair with a thick brush, the hair easily gets tangled in the brush, same effect with this carpet.) Some of the newer rugs can do this as well. Some newer carpets with the thicker felt backing and/or the "pet padding" under the carpet can too. it doesn't allow enough air to flow through causing the cleaner head to seal itself to the carpet causing a burning smell. The fix is Move to another home, replace your carpets or replace your vacuum. The vacuum is the cheaper option but be cautious as most vacuums now do this with these carpets. We have had really good response from customers using the Simplicity Tandem Air models, (Synchrony and Synergy models.)

Hope this helps, if you need to talk further feel free to contact me.

If belt is stretched do i have to replace it

If the brush is not turning when on carpet, then yes. The beater brush will turn if the belt is touching it, so looknig at it when the brush is not hitting the carpet is not a way to see if the belt still functions. There should be a window where you can see the brush turning. If the brush does not turn while on carpet, replace the belt.

Where is the belt located on my hoover steam shampoer

There is probably not a belt. The brushes on the carpet cleaner head and attachments work from air and there is a roller bearing deep inside that will wear out and the brushes won't turn. I've found no way to fix this. I consider it a design defect.

Does not pick up

Hi There,

It may be that your belt is broken, or stretched out. This will cause the brushes to slow down dramatically when vacuuming the carpets. When the belt stretches, this causes the machine not to pick up on the carpets, and makes it seem that the vacuum is loosing suction.

In order to test this, turn the vacuum on it's side while it's on. Are the brushes spinning? If they aren't, this is because your belt is broken. If the brushes are spinning, the belt still may be stretched. Listen to the brushes as you put them onto the carpet. Can you hear a change in the sound like the brushes are slowing down? If you put just a little pressure on the top of the vacuum by stepping on it, do the brushes stop then?

It may also be the filter is clogged in the machine and needs to be replaced. Bagless vacuums use a HEPA filter in the dirt cup instead of a bag. With a bagged vacuum you just replace the bag when it gets full, but on a bagless vacuum the HEPA filter continually gets debris and fine dust accumulating on it, and needs to be cleaned, and replaced occasionally.

Here's a link to the owners manual for your vacuum. This will explain step by step on how to replace the belt, as well as servicing the filter.

Losing power on a carpet attachment

Does the motor stop or the brush roll? If it is the brush roll, then replace the belt. If the motor is stopping, then it could be the motor or the cord for the opwer head.

Brush roll slows/stops turning

when you removed the beater brush did you clean all the lint and threads off the ends of the brush? you can unscrew one end of the beater brush plate to clean the crap off it. Inside the beater brush are two ball bearings. Use a light machine oil to lube these two bearings. re-assemble the rod and end nut. then put your brush back in the machine and note which direction the belt needs to be installed. there'll be an arrow on the motor housing.
