I had the exact same problem with my Magnavox TV. No sound and no video but the power light was lit.  You can find the solution here.

Philips magnavox 60" rear projection no sound no picture

That could be from

1) Faulty Lamp
2) Vertical/Horizontal Output IC
3) A Shorted IC driver
4) Blown fuse
5) Open resistors around the fuse

Keep all of these in mind and I would test the IC's first with a multimeter,IC's are transistors, usually having 3 legs and screwed into a heat sink,if they read 0 they are shorted. Also if you find something has gone bad, look around the component to see if there is an underlying problem as it will be frustrating and more expensive to find out after the first replacement.

If you have the following symptoms check the site www.TvRepairKits.com . They have a repair kit for this problem.

Screen shrinks and expands - may or may not correct itself after the TV warms up. After a few days, weeks, or months of having the shrinking/expanding problem you may loose all audio/video but the power light will remain lit!

Works on the following Philips Magnavox sets with chassis number

Magnavox 51MP392H/17 No pic only sound

Hello winwithrose,

The popping sound may have been a capacitor. The chance are the capacitor is in the HV section of the TV set and is part of the supply to the Horizontal section of the TV. First if you do not have electronics experience I would suggest you take the TV to a qualified TV repair shop. OK now if you have electronics experience I would say to unplug the TV, open the set up and do a physical inspection of the TV you will be looking for a capacitor that has exploded; if you find one look at the schematic for the TV and find its value. Then do so checks to find out why did the capacitor explode. Most likely the capacitor exploded because of wear and tear, but it always pays to check. Replace the capacitor with one of the same value and then turn the TV on, use your voltmeter to measure the voltage across the capacitor to make sure its the same or close to the value on the schematic.

These are the basics of what to do

I hope this helps

Thank you,

Shuttle83

Power is on -no pic/sound

Hello Immirich,
It sounds like you may have a power supply problem, since the TV is not clicking, I am going to assume that you are having a low voltage power supply issue. First I would power off and unplug the TV. Then I would take an ohmmeter and make sure that all of the fuses were good (set ohmmeter to Rx1 and measure across the fuses (it should read 0 ohms) after checking all of the fuses. Then I would do a brief check of the Horizontal Output Transistor (HOT) or the High Power Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor  (HP-MOSFET), whichever one is being used making sure that the lead that should be connected to the + power supply (Vcc) is not shorted to ground. If it is shorted, I would do a test of the IHVT (resistance (coils), Capacitance(between Anode and the metallic band of the core), and Ringer (primary side of the IHVT)) and the HV capacitor to make sure they were OK. If they are OK just replace the HOT or the HP-MOSFET and try to power on the set. If the problem was just the HOT or HP-MOSFET it should be working, if not the other tests mentioned will more than likely point you to the problem.

I hope this helps,
Thank you,
Shuttle83
