Malfunctioning Timer...replace your timer.
If your ging to do the job yourself, be sure to get the same mfg of timer that is in your dryer.
Also only disconnect and reconnect one wire at a time.
If you do not get the same timer as came with the dryer you will have to follow the instructions on how to wire the timer, that comes with the timer.

Maytag Dryer MDE6400AYW. Dries clothing but does not shut off in Auto Mode. Tried Timer mode but the knob does not advance on its own and dryer does not shut off in that mode either. Replace Timer?

Some of them timer can be oiled, (just a little zoom oil no wd-40) if it is real hard to turn, the knob can become cracked and the timer motor itself it may not have enough ump to move the gears and sometimes oiling the timer and moving it around many times loosens em up.

Kenmore electric dryer

If it won't shut off, would suspect the timer motor has failed, such that it cannot turn itself to the off position; I assume it will turn off when twisting the dial manually.

Automatic cycle dries but doesn't turn off GE

Check for bad motor timer. Attached to dial control. Test by turning dial to timed position without starting dryer. Dial should return to off. Timer is available online.
