Question about Nintendo Wii Console

1 Answer

We have had our wii for a few years with no problems. But when we started watching NetFlix on it, we noticed a problem. Once we move the wii remote more than 3-4 feet from the sensor bar, the pointer icon starts to blink like it's having trouble reading the remote, and if we move it any farther, the icon disappears altogether. The weird thing is that if we push any buttons from all the way across the room, it the buttons being pressed. It just doesn't seem to sense where it is pointing unless we are no more than 3-4 feet away. Any ideas?

I tried it, and the little finger icon still disappears. And I was a little off on the distance. It's more around 5 feet. I can't move the sensor bar any closer to the edge of the shelf, it will fall off. I can only provide history details. we still have the original sensor bar that came with the system, as well as the remotes. I can't say when this problem could have started because when I play, I play about 4 feet away. We haven't had to use the pointing ability from all the way across the room for over a year now. We only started doing it because we just recently got NetFlix through the wii, and we sit on the other side of the room when we watch. So it's possible this could have been an issue a long time ago, and I didn't know it.

The sensor bar setting is correct. Just to see if it would work, I switched it from bottom to on top of the tv and moved the bar accordingly. It did the same thing. The batteries are also at full power. Just to try it, I switched the batteries (all of ours are rechargeable), and no luck. I'm not sure what I am supposed to check with the second suggestion with the remote sensor and something about page 3 though. If that is page 3 of the manual, we no longer have it. By the way, thanks for putting in so much effort in this one problem:)

It could just be that your motion sensor bar is slightly blocked or just sitting a little too far back from the edge of the TV or shelf it is sitting on.That happened to me and I simply slid it forward a little towards the front edge.It occassionally happens when I dust abd accidentally move the sensor bar.If this does not solve your problem, feel free to comment back and I will get an autolink to your post and replay ASAP.I used to work on Nintendo systems as a full time job and have seen many quirky issues.

My only suggestion for now is to turn on the wii with a game in it.When you get to the wii channel page, there is a circle at the bottom labeled simply wii.Click on it.You can cycle through the options by putting the pointer on the left arrow and right arrow and clicking the button. When you get to the option for sensor bar, click on it and make sure it is set up for the appropriate position where your sensor bar is located. It is either top of console or below console.Make sure the appropriate one is selected. That may/may not fix it.If it does not,one remote possibility is the remote sensor,I believe on page 3,which is highly unlikely to be the problem. One last thing worth trying.Wii remotes seem to eat up batteries. One of the dollar stores,I believe Family dollar, sells 4 'AA' rechargable Energizer batteries for $10.Being how it is a dollar store,I cannot guarantee the Energizer brand is real, but i have purchased them and they last so much longer than regular batteries that it may be worth a try.If that doesn't work, just reply and I will call my ex-boss and see what he has to say about it.I call him periodically telling him it is my system and ask him about these seemingly strange ones and get a little insight too.Good luck! Greg Also,I am nott very familiar with the Netflix application, but i do see many problems concerning this and will ask him about the wireless internet possibly interfering too.

You are quite welcome.I have to run a couple errands and will call my ex-boss when i return and am able to run a couple ideas by him.Greg

  • Greg McCarthy Oct 07, 2010

I called Nintendo and they gave me a couple of real basic ideas which may or may not work.It didn't sound promising but is weel worth a shot.1 idea was tp clean off the sensor bar say with windex and the remote eyes on the controllers as fingerprints and/or dust could affect operation.Another was to unplug and plug back in the sensor bar from the Wii.Another possibility was to adjust the remote sensitivity which i think I already mentioned.Be sure when you are that far away that you are fairly accurately pointing at the sensor bar too becaus eit can be tricky to pick up from such a distance althou i must say i have never had a problem with it.The page 3 I meant was in the Wii circle menu at the bottom of the the Wii screen console which you have appeared to found.Sorry i took so long to reply also. Some unexpected things happened this week(of all weeks)but normally I get back to people within a few hours or a day at the most.Let me know if anything helps and if not,we'll keep on keeping on.I value customer satisfaction and do as much as possible to resolve issues.Good luck! Greg

Could be a few things.1.) Have you ran a firmware update lately? If so, I'd suggest reverting to factory settings.2.) If you haven't updated, it sounds like it's internal. Could be faulty hardware (4 years is quite awhile). Contact nintendo.
