Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My daughter recently bought a compaq laptop which I set up for her on the weekend, when it came to the keyboard language the default was US so I changed it to UK thinking that was the right thing to do because we are in Australia but now the @ symbol doesn't appear to be working. I thought I would try and change it back to US but couldn't work out how to do it but now that I am at work I googled my question and it appears that other people did the reverse and the @ symbol doesn't work on their machines either. I would really appreciate if someone can help me fix the problem because as you know the @ symbol is a very important key. Thanks very much Colleen Hodge

It was right in the first place in Australia we use the same as a US keyboard layout where UK have their keys moved around a bit like they need the pound symbol we dont. Go into control panel then region and language then at top of page click keyboards and change it back. .......cheers from Scott and plz dont forget to vote

My laptop keyboard when i type in letters the letters that i hit are not the same ones that come up on the screen what would cause this laptop not even a yaer old

I guess the keyboard layout (or language settings) have changed. It is easier to help you if you tell us the operating system and which keys are changed. But I'll try to help you here.
If you have XP, open control panel and select 'Regional and Language Settings'. Following window will appear.
select 'Language' tab and click 'Details' button.
When the following window appears, check what is in the top combo box (circled in red).
If you have a US English keyboard, it should be English (United States). Otherwise select the correct one from the combo box itself.
If the correct keyboard layout is not there in the list, click the add button and add the keyboard layout you want. Then select it as the default language from the combo box.
Hope this helps you!
Good luck, and thanks for using FixYa!

You could have your keyboard settings set to a different language.

option 1 (Language Settings)
1) Click [Start]
2) Control Panel
3) Regional and Language Options
4) Click on the Languages tab
5) Click on the [Details...] button
6) Check if the Default input language is set to English US
under installed services, check if the keyboard is set to 'US'

option 2 (Driver issues)
1) click [Start]
2) Control Panel
3) Keyboard
4) Click on the Hardware Tab and select the Keyboard then:
a) use the [Troubleshoot...] button or
b) click on properties, select the Driver Tab, Uninstall driver and press [Ok]
reboot your laptop. It should reconfigure your laptop keyboard drivers.

option 3 (Hardware issues)
If you have a PC, try connecting that keyboard to your laptop and see if that works. If it does then your keyboard maybe bad.

@ and " keys are reversed! How can I reconfigure

Hi John,
The standard keyboard language and widely used setting is "ENGLISH (US)"
Set the Keyboard layout to English US so that you have standard keys for symbols etc. like @ sign with SHIFT+2 etc.

The keyboard layout / Language of your PC may have been changed, so follow these steps to select the International keyboard layout:

- Go to Control Panel - Region and Language settings
- On the Keyboards and Language tab, click Change keyboards.
- Click Add.
- Expand the language that you want. For example, English (United States).
- Expand Keyboard list, select the United States-International check box, and then click OK.
- In the Default input language list, click Language name - United States-International (where Language name is the language that you selected in step 4), and then click OK two times.
- In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

The @ and " are reversed and i cannot get the UK pound sign

You need to change your keyboard default from USA to UK.
Your settings are in Control panel / region and language / look for the keyboard settings here.
If UK is not listed, click on add, choose UK and then make it default

Hi guy, I brought a hp compaq 6720s

You need to check your keyboard setting layout , look for it in your control panel and change the layout to either uk or us, which ever applies to you.

Keyboard problem

I could be a concern with the keyboard keys not being correctly mounted on the keyboard.
Try cleaning the same with some dry cotton. Else try these settings
check the keyboard lanuage settings in the control panel
is set to us english with hebrew as an added language
is hebrew one of the recent language releases if it is there might be a bug in the code they haven't discovered .

I have a compaq Laptop and I can't figure out how to use the ? symbol i've tried everything

I don't mean to make it seem like you don't know what you are doing, but usually the most simple of things are overlooked. Did you try holding down the left (or right) shift key, and then clicking the ?/ button?

if that doesn't work, then perhaps your keyboard settings in windows is not set to the correct language. if that is the case, let me know what version of windows you are using, and I'll guide you through how to change the default keyboard language setting.
