Turn on your system when you see the dell logo, tap on f12, there is an option there to click on IDE DIAGNOSTICS, or utility partition, using your arrow keys choose any of these and run the test, it will tell you if your hd is bad, if not you might be able to do checkdisk by using the xp disk and go to the recovery console.

Hey mguerrero,

Based on the error message provided, it appears that the hard drive on your computer may have developed what is referred to as a "bad sector." When this occurs, any information that is stored in that portion of the hard drive may become corrupted, damaged or lost. In this case, the bad sector may have directly affected a Windows start-up file, preventing you from being able to complete the loading process.

Bad sectors can develop for a number of reasons including manufacturer defects in the hard drive, as well as being a part of standard wear-and-tear.

The unfortunate part of this type of issue is that bad sectors tend to "spread" once they have surfaced. While preventative measures can be taken to isolate and mark bad sectors as unusable, there is no guarantee that the hard drive will not suffer another similar failure down the road.

For the average computer user it may be suggested to seek data back-up of any important information and to replace the hard drive, but more advanced users can always attempt to resolve this type of problem on their own by using any number of diagnostic/repair tools developed by either Microsoft or the hard drive manufacturer itself.

If you are unsure of how to proceed or would like further assistance, you may always speak with a Geek Squad® agent at your local Best Buy™ store for more information.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

This error code refers to "bad Sectors "on your harddrive ....and they cannot be accessed ......meaning your drive is probably toast or close to it .....there are HD diagnostics test you can download and run from the HD manufactuer....

OS is Windows XP Professional, my cd drive cannot read the data stored on a DVD disk. My driver is HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4482. Thank you

Windows XP is no longer supported, you should up-grade to Win 7 or buy a new computer. As for the DVD that it can't read, try it on a friend's computer and see if it works. If it does, your DVD/CD drive is defective or there is a software driver issue which means you can't receive support from Micorsoft.

OS will not boot up. unable to start in any mode and also unable to do chkdsk. doing an OS will not boot test, results in sata error uncorrectable data or is read only

My best guess is that your hard drive has failed or is failing. Replace it. Boot to your Windows CD/DVD and install windows. Then add your old drive as a second disk and, if you are lucky, you can copy your data from it before it fails completely.

Good luck. I hope this helps.

My OS freeze's as soon as i input my password

Hi there.
Sorry but i have to inform you that your hard drive is failing, the error messages that you are getting relate to this fact and is related to the hard drive having unrecoverable bad sectors or immanent hard drive failure.
There is no way you can recover the drive!!
Your only option now would be to buy a new drive for the computer or if the machine is still under warranty take advantage of that and send it in for repair, you will no doubt have to purchase a windows installation disk too.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Error code 0244

Hi there.
Error Code 0F00:0244
"Msg Block 5*****4: Uncorrectable data error code or media is write protected"
Sorry to say the hard drive has failed or is corrupt with bad sectors, with these Dell drives there is no way of fixing them.
There maybe a possibility that you can recover your data if it still spins up and you add it to another computer as a slave device.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

If you are getting bad block reports on your hard drive, it means that your hard drive media has suffered some degradation. It could very well be that some system files are being affected by this, thus continually triggering the problem. You may not like the suggestion I have, but it looks to me like the most solid solution (saving you hours and hours of troubleshooting).

Backup all files from your hard drive, save all of your browser shortcuts to backup files, then perform another Windows XP installation with a low level format of the hard drive. I know a PC specialist with many years of experience that says hard drives develop faulty areas over time and that every 5 years or so, it's just best to back up data from the hard drive and perform a low level format. This resets the device completely. If there are any faulty areas on the disk, they are skipped over--to the operating system, the drive will be perfectly fine.

This is not a guaranteed solution, but it sounds to me like it will eliminate a lot of possible culprits for you. Good luck.

Error code 0146 , can you help me ?

ALWAYS CHECK THE WARRANTY BEFORE DOING IT YOURSELF
If this is a Dell computer , it indicates a hard drive failure. if so here is the solution:
Look at the bios and see if the hard drive is detected.
To get to the BIOS, when you turn on the system, you will be confronted with a black screen with the dell symbol in the middle, if you look at the top left of the screen, you should see something like
Press F2 for boot options
Press F12 for setup
Keep tapping the F2 or F12 key for boot options. this will take you into the BIOS.
Check also that it says enabled
Next see if you can boot the dell diagnostics partition. {F12}, then select diagnostics, once you have the diagnostics available run the memory tests and the hard drive test.
you should get a report when it finishes looking something like this:
DST Short Test: Failed
Error Code: 1000-0146
Msg: Unit 2 : DST LOC Contains previous error(s)

READ TEST:
0F00: 0244
MSG Block: 57301297

VERIFY TEST:
0F00:1A44
MSG Block: 57301297
if there are more than two errors ide suggest a new hard drive. BUT TO SAVE YOUR DATA BEFORE ------>Do you have anything important? if you do, you will need to do a repair install of XP and get your files before the hard drive fails completely. Use the service tag to obtain full specs of the computer at dells website. This hard drive has previous errors, and has generated new ones. It looks like it is getting ready to fail. You may be able to use a xp disk to perform an operating system repair, the dell operating system CD will do this also. Here is a link: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm If you follow the directions exactly, you will not lose any files. Please continue to post about this issue, and operate this computer as little as possible.

My computer is running very slow. So I ran test of my Maxtor 6Y160M0 hard drive using the computer's "PC-Doctor" software. The 'linear' test failed, giving me an error code the instructions...

the drive is going bad
Try to format the Maxtor.
NOTE: obviously backup all important data to a removable drive or CD.
You will have to reinstall windows. so before doing this, make sure that you have the cd and Product key (usually on CD case).
