This will take any EIDE disk, read not SATA!! It is very simple to replace a disk. It is a challenge to reload the OS and the drivers. Before you start, make sure you have the recovery disks or an XP disk. In the process, all of your data will be lost unless it is backed up someplace.
If this answers your question, I'd appreciate 4 thumbs. I do this for fun and do not get paid.

M35X s111 won't boot

is the drive making any sounds, beeps, or sounds like clicking after revving up? Might need new hard drive, I had same laptop do the same thing, when it got to post, cursor of death= hard drive died. Also note that you need to replace it with a low GB drive, ATA or SATA not IDE. Try and get 80 - 120 gig if it does need replacing. For some reason I remember it wont run anything over 240G.
Good luck.

Fip it up side down, look at lap top rear on your right, remove screw just before footing, slide out the HD adapter/bracket.

I need to replace hard drive. On start up it says impending hard drive failure. Can I use a SATA or must it be an IDE. How big of a drive can I use? 250g? How difficult or easy is it to change?

I went through this problem 2 years ago. At the time I could not find an adapter for a SATA nor a larger HD without for less than a new inexpensive laptop. You need to purchase an IDE USB adapter to make your HD an external drive and recover your data. I found one for $12.00. I still use it with my old drive as for backup. Next format the old drive, if you are reusing it and install the operating system. I was able to find most of the drivers at Toshiba web site. I also used the CD's that came with the laptop for the video, internet adopter and modem drivers.
Good luck.

Can this take a 7200 RPM HDD?

The only compatibility issue for a hard drive with your laptop is the interface, whether it's IDE/PATA or SATA. Seeing as it's an old laptop, it's probably IDE, and I don't think you'll find many 7200 RPM laptop IDE hard drives. All the 7200 RPM laptop hard drives I know are SATA. So, probably not.
