Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a frigidaire side by side refrigerator. Recently water started collecting at the bottom of the freezer unit and eventually seeps out the bottom of the door. All other operations of the unit seem to be working normally. There is no obvious water leak so I suspect a problem with the evaporator during defrost cycles. Is this likely and how can I diagonose it for sure? Thx

Leaking water periodically under the refrigiater

When a refrigerator leaks water like yours, it is common for the problem to be nothing more than a clogged defrost drain. When the unit defrosts itself, the frost melt water drips into a pan underneath the evaporator in the freezer, and goes through a tube from there to the bottom outside of the unit. Since the water cant go down this drain, it backs up on the freezer floor, then eventually the kitchen floor.

I have water collecting on the bottome of my side by side refrigerator on the frigerator sided un the crisper.

Hello and Welcome to FixYa!
Actually the leaking water is from the evaporator coil unit....(it is located at the back wall or underneath the freezer compartment). Under normal conditions,Self-defrost refrigerators usually dispose the water generated during the defrost cycle through a tube or channel that directs the water a pan (Known as Drip pan), commonly below the refrigerator unit....
The channel or tube is clogged and the water is leaking to the refrigerator/freezer unit, so you need to clear that blockage/contamination....Once the blockage is removed, the generated water will move through that channel/tube directly to the drip pan and there will no water on the floor in the refrigerator/freezer compartment. This is all you need to do....

Best of Luck,

I have a Frigidaire Side-By-Side refrigerator Model #FRS26ZSHB3, that is collecting water on the bottom of the interior of the freezer side. I have to remove the ice every 2-days, otherwise the water leaks...

Drain system is clogged.
Clean the drain tray and drain line in the back of the freezer section, located behind the back cover and underneath the evaporator coil. (hint: use turkey baster with hot water) Make sure water drains when you pour it in. If it doesn't - also clean drain tube on the back of the unit behind the cover. When done - make sure to put the tube exactly where it was.

Good luck! :)

There is a chance that the drain hole is pluged or clogged with frozen ice. This can usually be cleared with hot water to melt the ice then dry off any remaining water with a towel.
the drain is located in the bottom rear of the freezer cabinet just behind the panel with the vent holes

Ice in the bottom of frigidaire side by side frost proof freezer

take all the bottom shelves and baskets out of the freezer. look at the back wall of the freezer. youll see a block of ice in a metal pan looking part at the bottom of the rear panel. there is a hole in the bottom of that pan. thats the defrost drain. its clogged. use a hair dryer to get all the ice out then use hot water to flush out the drain hole.
