Question about Garden

1 Answer

I have a Troy Bilt Horse 60TP. The battery died and I went out and bought a replacement battery. The battery size and arrangement of the terminal posts were exactly alike. However, I did n't realize the new battery had the "+" and "-" terminals opposite the old battery. I hooked up the cables as they were originally and since the replacement battery had its terminal polarity reversed, I inadvertently hooked neg side of batter to plus cable, and plus side of battery to neg cable. On cranking the engine there was a grinding sound then nothing.....when I hooked the battery up to the correnct cables later, I get nothing. The battery does seem to be okay. I can't seem to find any sort of wring diagram on the mower. I must have burned something out for the motor to go dead. Any thoughts on where/how to troubleshoot?

Pony size Troy-Bilt 30 years old\r\nQuestion; Can motor be replaced?

Yes but unless you purchase a engine with the two shafts, one for forward and one for reverse, you will lose your reverse. If you don't mind not having a reverse just go to a nearby Harbor Freight store or order on line a Greyhound 6.5 HP engine. these are Honda clones and run great they just had a sale here in Columbia Mo. and it was on sale for $99.99. I have used these on many of the Troy Bilt Horse tillers and they work great. They have metric threads and you may not be able to use your throttle cable but for the price you can't beat it.

Troy-bilt horse engiine runs good , tines work,

The wheel shaft on a Horse tiller is one piece so if the shaft turns on one side it will turn on the other. make sure the pin that holds the wheel on is not missing that would let it spin on the shaft.
That's the only thing I can think of that would cause that problem. Hope that helps.

Where do I find the model number and serial number, it is an old troy bilt rear tine tiller, two speed

The older models do not have an actual model number but only a name to distinguish the size. Early production models include the Horse, Pony and Junior. You must find the location of the serial number tag to order parts that will fit your particular rototiller for seamless replacement of parts. Hope this will help

Engine dies out

Could be any of several problems. Since you indicate you just bought it, I'd suggest you return it. Troy-Bilt is pretty good at making customers happy and should repair or replace it right away.

Can i see the models from 1983 to 1985,i need a belt so i can use reverse again but i dont now my model or size. my husband died 3 years ago. if i could see some pictures from the 1980's mine has a potatoe...

Your question doesn't give enough detail to properly answer. Do you know if the tiller is a Horse model or a Pony model? Troy Bilt made both models back in the timeframe you noted. The Horse model had tires that required air to inflate. The Pony model likely had hard rubber tires in that era. The Horse models had a reverse disc, no belt. The Pony had a belt.

Once you know which model you have - look for your closest Troy Bilt dealer and see if they can track down the part for you. They might appreciate it if you could provide the serial number - which is located on the pipe connecting the tiller transmission front half to the back half, where the tines are located. It's stamped right into the metal tube on both models.

Bring the old belt to the parts store and they will be able to measure it and get you the belt by size.

Have you adjusted the locking cam for forward. This cam is held in place with one bolt. The further you move it down the tighter it will make the belt
