Question about Mtd 22" Yard Machine Push Mower

1 Answer

The lawn mower (MTD 139cc) hit a stump that stopped it cold. Cannot pull the cord to start it. Took off the top and cannot move the metal fan (for lack of better description) on top. Thinking I am out of luck but do you have any suggestions on things I can take apart and see if I can replace them to get it to run?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
Hitting a stump did not do your mower any favors. The most common thing that fails when the blade is suddenly stopped is the flywheel Key. The keys are aluminum and made to shear so that the crank shaft is normally not twisted off at the point where the flywheel itself is bolted to the crankshaft.
The very thing you will have to do is remove the flywheel and inspect the key and keyways on the crank shaft and the flywheel. It will take a puller to remove the flywheel. Most flywheels have at least 2 holes in them where you can install bolts to assist in pullig the flywheel. The bolts must be threaded all the way in to the stopping point or they will ruin the flywheel. You MUST clean the holes out first before installing the bolts because they usually clog with lawn cutting debris.

Here is the bad news... If the flywheel key did not fail quick enough the resulting dmage can be the crankshaft gets twisted or the connecting rod can bend.

I need a complete engine type model and serial number (B&S) or just the engine number for a Honda engine to pass on any more applicable information. If you respond with that information I can help you with parts sources and probably a service manual for your engine to assist you in sorting out the damage.

Thanks for Choosing FixYa,

Kelly

MTD lawn mower won't stay running.

Did you empty the carb bowl and clean out any old fuel & contaminants? This is the most effective way to determine fuel issues. It also gives you the opportunity to remove all old fuel from the fuel lines, filter, & drain the tank bone dry. You may have already introduced water from your previous efforts so take out the plug & pull the cord a few times to dry out the cylinder. Next start the first time with starter fluid since you may still have contaminants in the primer system. In the future use only non-ethanol fuel, a marine grade stabilizer such as "Sea Foam" and replace all fuel every spring. Fuel begins to varnish and break down after 1 month unless stabilizer is used. Ethanol gas absorb water from the surrounding air in about 2 months & only gets worse.

Lawn mower primer button

Mike what i suggest you do is put a small amount of fuel into the block where the spark plug goes. If it doesn't fire after two pull change the plug. Also find the air filter and clean it.

Brand new and cant pull recoil

You say brand new so I assume that your pull cord has tangled up somehow. Things happen sometimes for no reason. To fix and check, remove the top cover to your mower and any attachments. The recoil is in the top cover. Look at it closely and try to loosen the cord. . Replace top cover and your ready to go. GOOD LUCK.

Crazy question but where is the primer button on the yard machine 139cc 21" lawn mower???????

The primer button is usually on the carburator of your machine. Most of the time on the side of the carburator , but sometimes on the front of the carburator. GOOD LUCK.

Where to find the spark pug on my 21inch 139cc mtd ohv lawn mower

It should be under a rubber boot between the valve cover *(stamped OHV or OHC) and the muffler.

Good luck and be careful. Dont pull that boot when the engine is hot!

My 2 year old Yard Machine 21in 139cc MTD engine push mower won't start. I've replaced the spark plug, air filter, and starter pull cord. I've also flushed the fuel line. I've run out of ideas to get it...

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, You will first seat the jet screws and count the number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns they were in/out.
Please do not forget to rate me, Thanks
Good Luck, I hope this helped

Make sure you have fresh clean fuel in the mower. Has the mower been setting for a while? Make sure your air cleaner is not plugged. Try starting with fresh fuel and the air cleaner off. Let me know if the cord tries to pull back or you have hit anything with the mower blade recently.
