Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

4 Answers

I have a PS3 from Europe and I live in Canada. My PS3 worked fine last year, both in HDMI and VGA cables. I moved to a new flat, and now it doesn't work on the TV we have in this apartement. I tried another TV to see if it was the TV that was too older, but the same problem appeared : the PS3 works but the signal on the TV is really bad. It's grey and doesn't stop jumping like waves on the screen, making it impossible to read anything. I just bought another VGA cable from Futureshop, and the same problem is happening on both TV ! I also know the special trick of changing from HDMi to normal resolution (kicking the ON button for 5 seconds when starting the PS3) and it's not that too. So what is it ? My PS3 broke some part when I moved maybe ? Help please !.

Ok, so the solution is to buy a new one ??

    That's really helping !

Ok so the solution to my problem is buying a new PS3 ? I mean I could have found out that one myself... Is it possible to open the PS3 and repair / change the broken part ?

  • Alexandre Oct 03, 2010

I don't want to buy a new PS3. Sound works really fine and also I can see that the PS3 itself is working properly, i'ts just the signal.

  • Alexandre Oct 03, 2010

So I tried both of your techniques owoblow11, and the same problem is still appearing, even when you get to the Recovery Menu.

  • Alexandre Oct 03, 2010

    It wasn't about you...
Thanks for helping and I'll call for your help if I still don't find anything.

I mean, I tried two different cables on two different TVs, and also the Recovery menu... It could only be the PS3 ! My wonder now is whether I have to buy a new one or if there is a solution with the same one...

  • Alexandre Oct 03, 2010

    I haven't, nope !

    :P

  • Alexandre Oct 03, 2010

I haven't said your solution was bad I just called for other ideas, including yours, but apparently the website is thinkng "one expert, one solution"... So you could suggest me stuff to do but you don't have the right to do it ?

  • Alexandre Oct 03, 2010

I can't read the Recovery Menu because the problem is still happening on the screen... waves

This is what the screen is like

  • Alexandre Oct 05, 2010

I need an answer !! So now I know the problem is internal to the PS3. What should I do to repair the signal ??? Thanks

  • Alexandre Oct 05, 2010

This is what it will look like, even when I'm in the Recovery Menu...
So I tried, for the 30th time, your solution, but it's stil the samme waves

You said that you have it connected to an older tv. This requires an adapter to change the Yellow, Red, and White to a coaxial cable. A lot of times the adapter goes bad and causes this problem. If you don't have the adapter then it is a resistor inside the playstation.

If you have a Sony PS3 that you move from place to place, you may run into the issue where you connect it to a new TV or monitor and you can't see anything because the video settings are different than what your PS3 is configured for. When this happens, you can't even get to the screen that allows you to set the video settings, so you are basically screwed. If this happens to you, there is a fix. Turn off the power to your PS3 and then turn it back on again. But when you turn it on, hold down the power button until you see something on the screen. When you hold down the power button of the PS3 when you are turning it on, it completely resets the video settings to the most basic settings (480p I think) so that it'll work on any TV or monitor. Once you can then get something on the screen, you can configure the video settings to match the TV you are hooking up to. You'll probably have to do the same thing when you take it back to your original location. But at least with this trick you can now move your PS3 around if you want.

Hello,

I will advice you try this steps to fix the problem,
Make sure video game consoles is connected via correct cable
Power Off the video game consoles via the power switch in back and power back on with switch. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps. Your video game consoles should automatically reset.

I will suggest you also try this, 1. Turn off video game consoles.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

Take care.

It does sound like something was damaged in the move, something with the video board. There should be nothing different about the way the TV's work and you've even tried a new cable. The PS3 is the culprit in my eyes.... do you have a friend that has one you can borrow to test with to confirm it works fine on your TV? I am betting a new one / different one will work fine.
Thanks Tim

Well before even attempting that it is recommended to test with another console of some sort (ps3 preferably) using the same cables. Yes you can fix the PS3, it is extremely difficult though, have you ever fixed a motherboard on a computer before? Including soldering and removing capacitors and the like?

    Thanks

Hmmm ok, well I wish I could have worked with you longer but you rated me already :( There were many more things to try once you confirmed the signal is the issue alone.

    Anyway, good luck

Sadly at this point you can't really call on me again since you rejected my solution, that's ok though...

Connecting Ps3 with philips tv (full hd) when i got hd cable in, and click to switch so the ps3 uses hd to show things and i than switch over to the channel i plugin the hdmi cabel it gives blac kscreen

If it's the first time using your PS3, use the composite cables that came with it. Turn on the PS3 go to video settings and switch the input to HDMI. After you've switched to HDMI, turn the PS3 off and connect your HDMI cable, go back to video settings and change the resolution to 1080p. If this isn't the first time you've used HDMI for your PS3, make sure your T.V. is on the correct input. If the T.V. is on the correct input, try switching the HDMI cable to a different input. If that doesn't work try using a different HDMI cable, testing different HDMI connections if you're still getting the black screen. If none of those work then it's probably a problem with the PS3, but just to make sure try plugging something else with HDMI to see if that works. If another HDMI device works, then it's your PS3, if it doesn't then it could be a problem with your HDMI connections on the T.V.

I plugged in my PS3 using an HDMI cable and i get no feedback

If you just bought the PS3 use your composite cables that came with the system. Turn the PS3 on and go to the video settings, set up video input to HDMI. After you've done that plug your HDMI back into your PS3 and try turning it on. If that works go back to video settings and change the resolution to 1080p. If that doesn't work make sure your T.V. is on the same input that the HDMI cable is plugged in. If it is and still doesn't work try switching to a different HDMI port. If switching to a different HDMI port doesn't work try a new HDMI cable. If the new HDMI cable doesn't work then there is a problem with the port on the PS3 which would require a repair.

Playstation 3 Does not display on TV using HDMI or regular video cable. senerio: My son hook it up using HDMI Cable to my bedroom sony flat screen tv to watch a blue ray movie and play some games. which...

I posted to your problem with a similar one. I was able to get my PS3 to work by:

1.) Powering down both the PS3 and ViewSonic LCD
2.) Unplugging the power cables to both PS3 and LCD
3.) Waiting at least 10 or more seconds
4.) Plugging in the power cables to both PS3 and LCD
5.) Turning on the ViewSonic LCD
6.) Turning on the PS3 and holding down the power button until the beep

After this sequence I heard the bootup audio and the menu appeared on the screen- which detected the HDMI connection to my LCD.

Very odd.. I've had my PS3 in the same place for months and just today this happened.

I wanted to post my success. Best of luck!
