Question about Maytag Dishwashers
I have the same problem. We cleaned the dishwasher out because the grit was coming from the dishwasher...however, we still have dirt/grit in our dishes, but a lot less. How do we get rid of this all together?

I had this exact problem and found the solution. Since bowls or cups accidentally turned over were being found after a wash cycle with this grit caught inside, I decided to turn a whole load of bowls upside down intentionally to catch this stuff. I filled each bowl about 90% with water to start with so that the pump wouldn't run dry. I ran about 7 cycles of rinse only, dumping out the grit found in every single bowl after each cycle. Finally, after 7 cycles, there was no more grit to be found. I ran a load of dirty dishes and they came out perfectly clean.

If you live in an area with hard water, the grit is probably hard water deposits. Detergents no longer contain phosphate, so they don't clean hard water deposits anymore. There is a great solution at www.cloudydishes.com
