Question about Dryers

My fan would run only on slow speed. I thought the switch may be the problem. My Hunter fan was equipped with a ZE-208 s5-1T that has 5 wires and need to know if and how to wire to a Zing Ear model 11.

This Zing is wired to a rectangular cube capacitor looking box with a part number 74133-28. No I was going to replace the Zing with a new Zing, but maybe you can give me a better suggestion. Is this capacitor looking thing the brain you mentioned?

Hi,

First, check to see that the fan blades turn freely by hand and coast after being spun. If rotation is in any way stiff, this is a sign of dirty, dry, or gummed bearings, which can slow the motor. Sometimes the bearings can become tight and binding which can also be an issue.

Second, does the fan wobble at all? If for any reason the blade pitch is steeper on one or more blades than the motor is designed for, this will slow the motor. This can often be the cause of warping, or a blade being knocked off balance. This will also cause the fan to wobble or shake. See the section on balancing. You can bend the blades to a shallower pitch if they appear to be too steep, but be extremely careful as blade brackets can break easily.

Most ceiling fans made in recent years use permanent split capacitor motors, as they are efficient and reliable. However with age capacitors can drift in value. If the blades turn freely and are balanced, the cause of a fan running slowly is almost always a bad capacitor. The capacitor is a small black box or silver cannister with two or more wires attached, and is located inside the switch housing, motor housing, or inside a bell on top of the motor. It should be replaced with a capacitor of equal value, they are marked i.e. 6uf, 4uf, etc. Some fans have capacitors with two or more values, they should be replaced with the equivalent of those values by one or more capacitors.

I believe the ZE-208s5-1T is just a regular pull style switch isn't it? Are you are trying to attach a "dimmer" style switch? I doubt the switch itself was the problem to begin with, probably the module that controls the fan is, the "brain" of the unit. Switches rarely fail, and when they do you usually can't select any speed at all. However I don't think you can replace that pull style switch with a dimmer style one, is that what you are trying to do?

Hunter fan switch doesn't work

I had this same problem. Home Depot and Hunter did not help me. I called Ken's Electronics in Kalamazoo Michigan Phone (269) 345-4609
website http://www.kenselectronics.com/index.html. He was excellent and very knowledgeable. Got repair part for about $7.00 and received it within two days. Great. I was so frustrated because it looks like I was going to have to purchase and install a whole new fan. Started to wonder if Home Depot and Hunter did this on purpose. Call Ken and he can help with questions and installation too.

3-speed fan switch broke on Hunter model 28072, cat. 300 fan. Found replacement switch at Lowes, but wiring colors are completely different from manual. What color wires go into L, 1, 2, 3 positions...

My Hunter fan uses a Zing-Ear ZE-268S6 switch. This is NOT a standard switch! It connects L to 2 AND 3 for medium speed. It is best to order the exact switch if possible. Hunter wants to sell you the entire bottom assembly (probably expensive). I found the exact switch online at:

http://www.kenselectronics.com/lists/switches.htm#Pull%20chain

for $6.80 plus $4.95 shipping. I bought an extra which didn't increase the shipping - worked great. Hunter ZE-268S6 ceiling fan connection colors: L=black; 3=green; 1=grey; 2=brown. If you need a different switch on their page, just click the Edit menu, then Find, type your part number in the box, and click Next.

You may be drawing to much amperage for the switch to handle both fans. You may be underwired if it is an old house. you can hook wires together without switch in place and see if everything keeps working but don't hook them together with the power on. Also don't run very long as the wires could heat up. Run for about 5 minutes and turn power off and check heating of wires.
