Question about GE GSS22JF Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

We have a gss22jf side by side refrigerator that has developed frost on the back panel of the freezer and is not getting cold enough to freeze food. We unplugged last night and let manually defrost. We also vaccuumed compressor which was filled with dog hair and dirt. Do you think we have fixed the problem or should we be checking the defrost timer? Can anyone help share where the defrost timer is located on this model?

Refrigerator inside not getting cold enough. A GE refrigerator side by side.

If it is just the fresh food section and not the freezer. Check out this link to see a GE condenser problem. Make sure to clean that condenser once a year. In most cases when the damper assembly flapper door goes bad in the fresh food section, the fresh food side will start to freeze your food. The next thing I would check is what John is talking about. Pull the freezer back panel off to see if your evaporator coil is frost over. When this happens it will restrict air into the fresh food side(refrigerator side). Fridge works freezer isnt getting cold enough to freeze

check to see if you have frost on the back panel of the freezer if so then defrost the unit and if your able to find the failure of the defrst heater or defrst thermostat,or the defrost thmer more than likely its the mother board since its a general electric frig but if you manually defrost until a repair tect can come then it will run normal until it frost up again but before you call the tech out make sure you have the frost on the back panel otherwise he'll make several trip trying to solve the problem with the frig unless its the defrst heater

Refrig not cold enough, ice buildup on banck panel of freezer

ice build up means your refrigerator is not going through defrost cycle. you have ice build up on evaporator which restricts your cold air flow into the fresh food side. check defrost timer, defrost thermostat located on evaporator behind the wall where your getting frost. check defrost heater. it wraps under the evap.

Freezer not cold enough, frig ok Frigidaire FRS6LR5EM7

Your defrost element is probably faulty, this is in the freezer compartment at the back and behind a removeable panel. You should change both the element and the defrost limiting thermodisc at the same time.

Left not transfering cold enough air to right side. doesn't get colder than 50 degrees, why?

Remove back panel of freezer (where you see the frost) and melt the frost with a hair blower. The frost blocked evaporator coils are not allowing air to pass over the cold coils, so no cold air is able to get to the fresh foods section. You will most likely need to replace the defrost heater at the bottom of the evap coils to prevent this from reoccurring in two weeks time.

Freezer not freezing enough and fridge not cold enough

Hello Scott, remove the food from the freezer side and remove the rear freezer panel. You will see a coil and it should be completely frosted over. If not then you have a sealed system issue. If it is froze solid in frost where you cannot even see the coil, then you have a defrost issue. You should have a little frost on all the coil, the defrost is what clears the frost so the evap fan motor can circulate the air thru out the unit. If frost is good, push the light door switch to start the fan. If it isn't running check for 120 volts. If it has voltage, but not running, replace the motor. Hope this helps.

Your condenser where the heat is removed from the refrigeration system may be plugged with dust. The condenser is more than likely located in back of the refrigerator behind a removable panel. Remove the panel and clean it out. Reinstall the panel after you have cleaned the condenser.

Check the back wall of the freezer for frost buildup. If there is frost buildup on the back wall it indicates that there is a problem in the defrost circuit.

Note: The proper term is "More mature individual" , not old.
