Question about Toshiba Satellite M35X-S161 Notebook

1 Answer

I need to replace hard drive. On start up it says impending hard drive failure. Can I use a SATA or must it be an IDE. How big of a drive can I use? 250g? How difficult or easy is it to change?

I went through this problem 2 years ago. At the time I could not find an adapter for a SATA nor a larger HD without for less than a new inexpensive laptop. You need to purchase an IDE USB adapter to make your HD an external drive and recover your data. I found one for $12.00. I still use it with my old drive as for backup. Next format the old drive, if you are reusing it and install the operating system. I was able to find most of the drivers at Toshiba web site. I also used the CD's that came with the laptop for the video, internet adopter and modem drivers.
Good luck.

A sata drive doesn't need jumpers. The jumpers were only required when 2 drives used the same cable.

Replace hard drive

The eMachine T3995 hard drive was originally an IDE 250GB drive. These drives are obsolete and hard to find.

I suggest using the following Generic IDE to SATA device on Amazon for about 7 dollars and then replacing the IDE drive with the SATA drive of your choice such as the 320GB Western Digital Blue listed on Amazon at about 25 dollars. Both IDE and SATA drives mount the same way.

How do i install a wdeads hard drive? where is the power supply (4pin Molex)?

Question is vague. Are you replacing a drive or building a new system? SATA drives have a dedicated plug on the Mother Board. Of course you already know you can't replace an IDE with a SATA without an adapter (Ebay has them for about $8) or the Bios is incompatible. The power is on the Motherboard and does not have a connector from the power supply like an IDE has.

Sata DVD burner

This is happening because the DVD SATA is booting like a first drive instead of the IDE Drive.
Be sure that your SATA drive is connected to a right port on your motherboard.
Go to your bios and into the boot options be sure that the IDE drive boot first than the SATA DVD.
Another way is connecting an adaptor SATA to IDE and connect your SATA DVD Drive as second IDE on your motherboard.

This will be fixing your problem.

Have a great day

Using a Sata Drive with an IDE cable

Depending on how old your system is, even though your current drive is IDE, there might still be SATA support on the motherboard. Look in your manual and find out if it has any SATA connectors. If not, you need to continue using IDE unless you want to purchase a PCI card with SATA connectors on it.

Well the replacement drive should be the same interface. i.e. if its an IDE drive then you'll need an IDE drive if its a SATA drive you'll need a SATA drive! regards, babb
