Question about Leviton Decora Light Dimmer Switch

1 Answer

Our flourescent kitchen light stopped working...turned the switch on one day, the light came on , then went right out. We wanted to change fixtures anyway so we used this as an opportunity. Purchased new track lighting, installed it, attached the lights, according to the directions...and nothing! We changed the switches (the light can be operated by two switches), still nothing. Our ohm meter detects electricity in all switches, track, light wires, and light fixtures themselves. Whats going on???

If you are showing power at the switches, have you checked at the light fixture itself? You will need to read from the black to the white make sure that you have 120 volts if you do then hook up wires to light fixture and read again. If you no longer read 120 volts then you have what I would think is a lost neutral. That is the white wire. You will then have to do a little back tracking to find where your hot feed is coming from. Check this for now and reply back if you need further help. Good luck!

Hi Leonard,

I'm a licensed electrician and will be happy to help you get this working again. I suspect an incorrectly wired or incompatible switch or a load that is not designed for dimming. To know which one(s) is the problem and to be able to provide a solution, I need a little more information.

1) What was the old switch brand and model number?
2) What is the new Leviton switch's model number?
3) What type of light bulbs are you trying to operate in the 3 fixtures?
4) What is the number of and wattage of each lamp in the fixtures?
5) How many switches operate the lights?
5a) If more than one switch is used, what is the brand and model number of the other switch(es)?

Thanks

We have fluorescent cove lights in the living room. We think the "starter" is bad, but we can't locate the "starter". Can you help? We have tried switching the working light bulbs...

Very few flourescent lights have "starters" these days. If it does have a starter, it will be a visible cylindrical object usually located at either end of the fixture. More likely it's the ballast that is bad. Turn off the power and remove the cover to the fixture. The ballast will have a lot of wires coming out ot it. Take note as to where all the wires are attached, remove it, and take it to a hardware store or Lowes or Home Depot to get a replacement. Make sure it is an _exact_ replacement. Sometimes it's easier and cheaper just to replace the entire fixture as some of the older ballasts are expensive due to there being replaced by newer technology.

Wire connection from lighting ballast

What you do is cut the wires from the old ballast that feed to the fixture end connectors then 'wire nut' the new ballast wires to the old wires.

Tradewind range hood- model PSL736: both lights out, fan works

The screws by the lights probably only hold the fixture in place. If you took the screws out you would only get access to the fixture and maybe some wiring. If you have already replaced the lights you can assume its not the fixtures. Not likely both fixtures failed at the same time. The common problems would be the light switch. You would need to gain access to the switch and then check that for power.

You already know house power is good because the fan is working, But since both lights failed and new bulbs don't fix the problem it would most likely be a switch.

According to their website it looks like that whole front panel should come off including the fixtures and the switches.

MAKE SURE THE POWER IS TURNED OFF......REMEMBER THE FAN WON'T WORK IF THE POWER IS OFF.

Once you remove that you can check the wiring harness for the lights. You may also see wire nuts on the harness double check those as well.

Kitchen lighting problem.

Open neutral. check the fixture/switch closest to the bkr panel that is not working for a bad connection in a wire nut, if not there, move to next fixture/switch closer to the panel

Have a Lutron Skylark SF-10P need to wire to existing 3 wires

You have to have a special ballast on the light to dim fluorescent light fixtures. You also have to have a special dimmer.
