When the unit displays protection immediately, that indicates an amplifier failure - which is not a consumer repair.

Weight out the value of the unit vs. replacement cost vs. repair cost. You'll most likely find that replacement is the most economical route.

Do you hear the speaker protection relay click after about 10 seconds when you turn the receiver on? Does the display show PROTECTION on the display? These conditions indicate a bad channel that will keep the receiver from functioning but you still have lights. Steve

My teac ag-790a 'protect' error message on display. When I brought it to the audio shop for repair it worked fine; at home again the same problem? What is the problem? Tx.

Hello
Check the putput wirings to speakers. If any of them has short circuit, the set will go to protection mode. You can understand it well, as it did worked fine at the repair shope. The set has no fault at all, but the wirings, connects to it have.
Just power ON the set at your home, without connection any output or input to it. See, it will not show any protection mode display. Switch it OFF. Connect the output to speakers, one at a time, and switch ON the set. Just do it for all other speakers. This way, you can find out, which speaker line causes the set to go to protection mode. Fine out the reason.
Never connect any input to the system, until works fine with out showing any protection display.
I helped you somewhat fine, I assumes.
Ok.

After turning ON the power/standby switch, the unit(receiver) display comes ON (green light) then after approx.4-5 seconds the display goes OFF and the unit defaults back to the standby mode (red light). I...

Is the red light flashing at first?
The unit may be going into protect mode. Lets hope it has done the job and the receiver has protected itself from failure.
Protect mode can result from speaker wires touching each other or the Amps2_bing.gif metal case. Check that first.
It can also be caused by unstable ohm loads if too many speakers2_bing.gif are connected to any of the outputs especially zone 2.
If you can remove all speaker wires and turn the unit back on. If it stays on, turn the volume down on the main zone and zone 2 if connected. Then reconnect speaker wires.

First, disconnect all speaker wires from the unit and power it back up. If it does not go into protect. post a comment and I can walk you thru troubleshooting. If it goes into protect, it needs to be serviced.

Amplifier/receiver switches off systematically after a few second of use

Sounds like a bad output channel is causing it to go into protect mode. Time to see a repair tech.
