Question about Dell I531S-2809 PC Desktop

2 Answers

My older version(1996)Ultimate Yahtzee will not load on my new Dell computer loaded with Vista that I purchased last year. My old computer that crashed used Windows XP which I have been tempted many times to load in my Dell. I ordered my Dell from the company and it was loaded with Vista when I received it. This was less than a month before Windows 7 came out. I have several software items that I used all the time that is not compatable with Vista.

You need two things: 1) the emulator software "VMware" which is a free download from https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/5_0'PLAYER-501'product_downloads

It will set aside a number of GB (you can specify how much) on your hardrive as though it is a separate and EMPTY new computer.

2) You need to install the OS you wish to emulate on this new virtual computer. I recently 'installed' an old original copy of Windows 98 on my laptop (factory configured with Windows 7 Home x64 bit) to run an old 16-bit software program that worked fine on XP, but simply would not install on Win7 no matter what compatability settings I tried. VMware works and is free for non-commercial users. Also, I recommend dowloading the vmware tools when it asks--it makes setting up graphics and audio in your virtual computer much easier...

You will have to try using compatability mode to load and use these applications.

Below is a link to Microsoft's support site that outlines how to use compatability mode to load legacy (older) applications.

I have a finnish version of Eyewitness encyclopedia of space and the universe, it worked years ago on our old computer but now I can't get it working on our new one.. the installation will not complete,...

What OS does your new computer have? What was your old OS? Unfortunately, install codes do change with OS versions and a program for a much older program will not run on a new OS (esp for Microsoft products). This program (in its English Windows version) was coded to run under Win95-WinXP; it probably can't run under Win7. You can try installing in the compatibility mode (for Windows - right click on the installer and select properties and the compatibility tab). However, this doesn't always work. It isn't a program listed in the Windows Compatibility Center for Vista or Win7 (although the Vista version is confused with its search results - 47 items found becomes 11).

Another option is to install an OS that will run the program as inside a Virtual PC program or as a dual-boot option. (Win7 Pro and Ultimate allows you to install XP mode free (a virtual XP computer after you download and install two programs from Microsoft).) Otherwise you will need a valid licensed copy of the OS you need.

I wish that I could be of more help.

You may need new software, you might want to look for it on the web. Is your Vista 32 bit or 64 bit version? If 32 bit, you might be able to run it in compatibility mode.

Compatability with older programs

start menu... control panel... click on programs... under programs and features you will see "use an older program with this version of windows"

The compatability wizarrd will start.... let it show you the complete list of programs on your computer. chose one program at a time and run them in the under xp.

Repeat those steps for the programs that do not work properly under vista.

Hi, Unfortunately Microsoft has blundered and not told anyone. Most older programs will not run in VISTA. I hope you burnt your download to a CD, you could use it at a later date when Microsoft finaly put VISTA right. At this time you only have two choices. Buy all new software that is VISTA compatable or go back to the good old faithful XP. Regards mistyman
