    Password problems.

Depending on the type of router, you could have various defaults set, if you never changed them.
You can press the reset button somewhere located on the router itself, using a pen/pin/pencil, and then google your brand of router asking what the default password is.
If it is a Linksys, you could google "Linksys default password" or "Linksys default login" for example.

    How to set a password?

  • Access the router's default configuration address through your Web browser by entering this address: (see Resources). Do not enter a user name. Enter "admin" for the password. That process works for all new Linksys routers. If you have changed the user name or password in the past, use the user name and password that you created.

  • 2

When the configuration screen opens, click on the "Wireless" tab and select "Wireless Security" to view the router's current security password. The "Security Mode" field will say "Disabled" if you do not have a password to secure your network.

  • 3

Select the appropriate encryption type from the "Security Mode" drop-down menu. Linksys routers offer WEP and WPA encryption. WPA encryption allows you to use a single password to access the network. WEP encryption creates 10- or 26-character keys that act as your password. Some of your wireless devices may only utilize a certain type of encryption. Determine which protocol is best for your network.

  • 4

Enter a password that will be required to access the network. For WPA encryption, you can write your own password. For WEP encryption, click the "Generate" button to create passwords that can be used to access the network. Write down your passwords and keep them in a secure location.

  • 5

Click "Save Settings" to confirm your changes. Your network will now be secured and will require a password for access.

  • 6

Click the "Administration" tab to create a password to access the router configuration page itself. Be sure to change the password from the default "admin." Reenter the password for confirmation in the next field. Click "Save Settings" to confirm your new password.

My Linksys router decided to reset itself and I am unable to figure out how to reconfigure it. I'm trying to open a browser using this IP address:, however nothing happens when I do that.

If your are sure that it was reset, then probably its IP could have changed to the default value. for Linksys routers, the defult normally is . but otherwise it may vary depending on your specific model. also, On older LinkSys routers, the username is set to blank and the password is set to "admin" (without the quotes). On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to "admin".
check in its manual or post model here and I assist you further.

My daughter is here visiting and she tried connecting her laptop to our wireless internet but instead created a new network. It changed the name of our network and is now password secure but noone knows...

there is hope if she did not change the default username and password of the physical router itself. because then you could connect to the router using the default ip address for linksys routers and connecting to it using the default username and password. Then you could probably restore the default network setting from within the router with probably a one button option in there. All depends on the router. Then you can reconfigure all the setting to go back to however you had it before...I won't even get technical with it because you'll probably need to have a tech or someone do it.

But before we get ahead of ourselves make sure that what you need isn't just the WEP key which can normally be found on the router itself. If this is all you need it will save you a ton of headaches.
