Question about Brother Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Hi, I am using a domestic brother XL26-20 sewing machine, it is threaded correctly, the tension seems to be fine as it the stitch and stitch size but every time i sew, the machine makes a clicking sound and there is always a lot of looped thread gathered on the underside of the stitch line. Can you suggest any reason for this or how i can stop it? I have checked under the machine and there is nothing blocking it and no thread gathered underneath If you could please get back to me as soon as possible i would be very grateful Thankyou Fiona

Are you using the same weight of thread top and bottom? Usually it is the top threading causing the problem, either it is tangled or slipped out of a guide, totally rethread and install a fresh needle. other than that you should call Brother at 1-877-276-8437

THe thread on the bobbin side gathers but the top part sews fine what what be the problem.

Thread it with 2 colours of cotton thread, red and white are good (use the same brand and size of thread).
>>Make absolutely sure you are threading the machine correctly.<<

Then sew on a 3rd colour of cloth, say yellow. You can now easily see the stitches.

Tighten your top tension a half number, if the red shows on the underside of the cloth, tighten another half number, check again.

Continue doing this until your stitches look nice on the top and bottom of the cloth.

Done. Remember the thread tension setting for the future.

How do I get the stitch length to be consistent? It changes with speed

consistent stitch length depends primarily on tension settings. there are 2 different tension settings on all machines. 1. upper thread tension. 2. bobbin thread tension. since these work together to create the correct stitch length+width, having either of these adjusted inappropriately can significantly impair stitch quality. "knowing' your machine has a lot to do with knowing how tight or loose the tension should be for BOTH settings. the settings will be different for each type of stitch, for each type of needle used, and for each type of thread used, meaning tensions will need to be re-adjusted after each change. in other words, the setting for a medium-width zig-zag with a size 10 needle using mercerized cotton thread to sew light-weight canvas will be completely different than the settings for a regular straight stitch using a size 8 ball tip needle using polyester thread to sew silky lingerie material.

Skipped stitches
1. The needle is not inserted correctly
Remove needle & reinsert needle( flat side towards the back of machine)
2. The needle is damaged
replace with new needle
3. The wrong size needle is being used
Choose a needle to suit the thread & fabric
4. The foot not attached correctly
Check & attach correctly

Borrow sewing machine from sister unsure how to thread it correctly and when i do the thread fromthe needle keeps breaking when i try to sew its a brother XL-5130 sewing machine and i know nothing on how...

you need to go to this webpage http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us_ot/en/doc/manual_index.html?reg=us&c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=hf_xl5130eus&dlid=&flang=English&type2=-1 and download the instruction manual for this model. It has the threading up instructions plus selecting stitches, winding a bobbin etc.

The thread breaking is most likely due to incorrect threading up of the top thread. I suggest that if you can, you print out the manual, put into a little folder and place beside the machine and refer to it often. Follow the instructions in it on winding a bobbin, putting it into the bobbin case correctly and threading up the top thread. Make sure the bobbin goes into the case the correct way, as per image.
tally_girl_40.jpg
Remember, ALWAYS THREAD UP TOP THREAD WITH THE PRESSURE FOOT RAISED, this keeps the tension discs open so the thread can seat into the tension device correctly. And you must get the bobbin thread into the tension spring fully and then place the bobbin case into the shuttle using the little latch so it stays in place.

Also, new needle for every new project, and put the needle in "flat shank to the back". It will take standard domestic sewing machine needles 705/130H but it is important to select the correct sized needle for the fabric you are sewing so that the needle can penetrate the fabric but not leave big holes. So for light weights like chiffon you want a size 60 or 70. For medium weights a size 80 and for heavy fabric like denim or a coat weight wool you would use size 100. Ball points for stretch fabrics so that the needle pushes between the fibres and a regular point for woven fabrics.

I trust this helps you out, 4 thumbs up if so. Thank you.

My bobbin stitch is loose. I have tried adjusting tension and have changed the needle.

A. To correct loose stitches, try the following: (1) Balance the thread tension. If the stitches are loose on top of the fabric, decrease the tension to the next lower number. If they are loose on the underside set the tension to the next higher number. (2) Make sure the needle/upper thread follows the threading path. (3) Check to see that the bobbin case is threaded properly. (4) Use a different size needle. For fine fabrics, use a smaller needle (size 9, 11); medium-weight fabrics require a size 14 or 16. And use a size 18 or "Denim" needle for heavy corduroy or denim.

according to the diagram in the manual, the upper thread tension is set by the wheel/knob on top and just to the right of the thread take up lever and thread guide. If you don't have a manual, go to www.brother-usa.com they have a downloadable manual for your machine.

Problem while sewing buttonhole with a thick thread

You will need to use a size 18 needle or even better a size 18 top stitch needle. It has a larger eye.Tighten the tension to about an 8 and try it. You may have to lengthen the stitch length to make it sew satisfactorily.. If it won't work on 8 go to 9 and if it still won't work, wrap the thread around the bobbin winder guide (on the left top of the machine) for more tension. It is very hard to sew heavy duty thread on a household machine.

It sounds like you may have uneven tension between the bobbin thread and the upper thread. You can adjust the tension via a screw on the bobbin case. Turn it clockwise to tighten the bobbin thread tension and counter clockwise to reduce it. It's also worth remembering to check the tension on the presser foot for the material you are using. Check also that the shuttle race is clear of lint etc. Hope this helps
